ha ha ha ha
Well, I'm going to be more selective about my choice of containers, this is a tough crowd! :)
The last post:
"not automatically assume that the last person to STAMP IN was actually the last FINDER"
is probably the best place to start.
Let's assume good intent of all folks who post their finds. I've had a box go missing after I visited them and I agonized over whether I was indiscreet or not. The Placer, fortunately, was quite gracious and refrained from finger-pointing.
So, let's assume good intent. Let's phrase our queries as just that, not accusations.
This box was in disarray--did you note anything odd on your last visit? Any thoughts you might have on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Most letterboxers I've interacted with are genuinely nice people who care enough to reclose and rehide things properly. The reality is that we do not live in a society of respect, so while your friend ("the accused") is undoubtedly a thoughtful, respectful individual, it is likely a subsequent finder (likely a non-letterboxer) who was careless.
I'll refrain from providing instructions as to where the Planter may elect to rehide the box, but certainly it is appropriate to call them on their behavior. Again, honey and flies. Best to start nice, "I'm sorry you got the impression I would be careless with this letterbox. I assure you I was appropriately cautious." and then indicate they came across as somewhat harsh. I'm one person who comes across alot more brash (and rude) than I really am, so I can appreciate that the Planter may not have intended to come across as a supreme jerk.
I'll restate my quote of a few weeks ago that floated around the boards a short time:
It's nice to find a community of creative, slightly twisted people with similar interests.
We're a community. Let's make nice.
I am very sorry to hear your friend got the roasty email. No one likes those--deserved or not!! (And clearly undeserved in this instance.)
Cheers,
Renee

now, now...let's take a deep breath together.
*big breath*
I know you know that ALL letterboxers are NOT rude...unless you found all those wonderful folks at the Asheville gathering rude and I know that isn't the case :) we all had a wonderful time and it is mainly because boxers are as a whole...are good people.
the hobby is wonderful and so are the people...
even those that take you back as rude etc usually turn out to be great folks caught in a bad situation... or there was a misunderstanding...or...of course...miscommunication.
I know of Lock and Locks that have been mishandled and the lid put on wrong or even a piece of the contents caught between the seal and bottom...etc. you gonna blame the placer for the container then? they are some of the more expensive and seen by most as THE best container to use. don't ASSUME it was the placers fault because of a crappy container either.
I bet that...in most cases...if someone got their feathers ruffled or became a bit jilted over finding their creations at risk...it means they take pride and care in their boxes and they may have just been the type to be concerned enough to splurge on the GOOD containers.
this is my honest opinion...
even if the concerns are unfounded...
wouldn't you rather someone bring a possible error to your attention??
I would...
it probably only means that person cares and hopes in return that you too would care enough to keep a plant active and able to survive.
even if there was an assumption...
it's best to hear the concerns and ...do so as adults.
what if everyone was always afraid to ask...did you leave it like this or has it been found by muggles since then? we'd never learn some of the dos and don'ts and it would be silly to not be able to be open and honest.
now...I am not promoting mean behavior but I have yet to meet a mean person in boxing!
however, I have virtually met some who seemingly want to be my nemesis *chuckles*
(joking)
dixie
making my nemesis list ;)
