Attn: Letterboxers attending the Waxhaw, NC gathering on March 31st!! It has come to my understanding that others have been donating school supplies, blankets, food, even letterboxes and other necessities for our wonderful military people in Iraq to distribute but we have neglected to share something really useful.. Coo---- i mean SOCKS!

I am re-carving my "Box-o-Sox" event letterbox and will be sending all socks donated (new clean socks only please) to our men and women in Iraq....So, there will be a big mailing box at the Waxhaw, NC gathering on March 31st to gather these .....socks....

I wont be watching this box all day... but should any other little packages get dropped in... i mean.. i cant help it right???

.. Imagine the joy you will cause when our military find they can spread the wealth of warm socks and.... other things.... to others in Iraq just like we do here in the states!!

thoughtfully yours,
*EVIL LAUGH*

Did you just type WARM SOCKS?? Unless I'm mistaken, the temperatures in Iraq in March-April will already be soaring into the 90s during the day. Socks made with ...coot....I mean Coolmax would be a good choice as they are "cooler"
kwmom
p.s. Previously employeed as a sales/marketing manager for a North Carolina born and bred Sock Company-I know more about socks than a human probably should!! I maybe could gather a few extras from said sock company (here in Statesville, hint, hint) to contribute! Best socks made (hint, hint)

or SWEAT SOCKS..... when the temps get warm... people need sweat socks to keep their feet from "perspirnin'" as my grandpa would have said.

the socks most requested are ThorLo's...which btw KoTL04 has worked out a back door deal on these socks for about $2.50 a pr when they are normally $10...quite a few soldiers really appreciate them as I pass them out at the FOB...to bad I haven't run into any other willing souls to stamp in over here
cuz w/ the harbinger's help...I would have plenty o cooties to spread...muwahhaaaa

the ThorLo's are a blend of a silver thread and moisture wicking properties w/ natural cotton/and sometimes wool...the silver threads combat bacteria and fungi...the moiture wicking...well draws away moisture...and cotton doesn't burn...like some man made fibers...and when hummers get hit...there usually is a small fire involved...BR1

I think BRO said this, but just in case, it's not always a matter of coolness. They have to worry about stuff like fire...when something explodes and a fire is involved, if it's got synthetic fibers in it, they melt...not good.

So, my BIL prefers a special type of sock...or, even better, hand knitted ones from wool (don't ASK! lol). The hand knitted ones don't necessarily last as long as synthetic, but they do the wicking necessary, take a beating, repel dirt, are pretty much wash and wear (but no heat drying), etc, etc....

Just what's I've learned after supplying my BIL through 5 deployments...

Well, now you went and named the company! I sold Thorlos for 16 years! As you probably know, they ARE truly the best socks around. You probably also know there are MANY different types of Thorlos including military boot Thorlos. My personal favorites are the socks with Coolmax knit in them as they are cooler on my feet than "Thorlon" which is an acrylic........no "perspirin" as 3Ms grandpa says-they are "sweat" socks (that keep your feet dry)
For those of you who may not know....Thorlos are made right here in Statesville NC and are "finished" just down the road in Rockwell, NC and shippped all over the world from there. They truly are made in the USA! Thorlo is the original sport specific sock!
The "inventor" of sport specific socks-Jim Throneburg-is a Statesville native!
We'll get you guys some Thorlos!!
kwmom
p.s. I really do know more about socks than a person should! AND I have more socks than a person or family or small city should!!

What is the specific name of the Thorlos you guys prefer? I still have a few favors owed to me and a couple of strings I can pull so let me know exactically which ones you guys like-the style number/names will be fine. There are so many types and the LARGE majority of Thorlos have absolutely NO cotton in them as a matter of principle b/c cotton absorbs moisture and keeps it trapped in an enclosed environment (boot or shoe) and the result is wet feet which generally eventually results in blisters and bacteria, etc. The LARGE majority of Thorlos are exclusively acrylic fibers with the "cooler" products being polyster blends.
I've been gone a couple of years and Thorlo is a company that is constantly researching so it sounds like there are some new products I'm not aware of. We even attempted to make products out of Kevlar a couple years ago-for firefighters!
Now you've got me wondering what's new at "the sock mines"........

Well, since my name has been mentioned...I had better get in on this...

Anyone who wants to contact me I will give information in reguards to the Thorlos...and we will get a box together to send after our mini meet in Statesville. If anyone has anything else they would like to put in the box...they are more than welcome to send...we'll say...ANYTHING (hint hint) they would like to send will be fine with me...I use the flat rate boxes most of the time, so there is plenty of room.

Give me a call or email!

MUHAHAHHAAHHA.. ok..

this is what i was thinking..... the civilians out there would benefit more from the regular socks that get donated. you probably have a place or a person there you put stuff to hand out to them?????
any socks that get donated (thorlos or not) can be kept by you and your company. how's that sound?

and i will personally go though all the extraneous materials that get "donated" to be sure nothing is "hazzardous, liquid, perishable, or fragile" and that it can get through customs and whatnot. It's a sacrifice throwing myself on these coo---i mean socks like i'm going to have to do before i turn them over to you, but i'm willing to make that sacrifice for my country!!!

Our Girl Scout council (Catawba Valley Area) is implementing a program "Operation Sweet Treat" where folks can buy girl scout cookies to be sent to Iraq via our council. However, we (my local little Cadette troop) could also send some GS cookies via koTL04! We will be having cookie booths in 2 weeks and we can "ear mark" some for you!
I'll talk with you via personal e-mail to coordinate.
kwmom
p.s. From a survey with troops, the things they missed 2nd to news/mail from home was girl scout cookies!

I've been meaning to ask what cookies Pines has that Catawba Valley doesn't. Last year, you guys had the "other" lemon cookies (the ones made like Danish Wedding cookies with the powdered sugar). I want another box of those. We changed lemon cookies this year, and while I like the new ones, I really liked the old ones better. I'll have to make a trip to Raleigh and get some cookies!!!

ah but of course.....throlos.com

Also, whenever you are in Statesville, there is an outlet where you can see EVERYTHING and also purchase imperfects which generally are just a dirty spot and a great deal. most of the customers who shop there are from all over the country and plan to make a stop when passing through on I-77 or I-40
