Speaking of which - that chocolate mint fudge I had in Dillsboro while we were hunting the Dillsboro series - OMG - that should send all the NY'ers flocking south!!!

One of my good friend is a transplant from Connecticut via Maine. She and her son lost their Mainer accents long ago, but her husband never will.

One day we were having lunch, and she said "Can I ask you a question?" looking very serious. I thought "oh no, something's wrong!!" She asked........

"When you are at the grocery buying grits, what kind do you buy?"

I swear, I stared at her for 30 seconds before collapsing in laughter! She, Yankee though she is, has always like grits, and had finally decided to buy some (after living in NC for 7 years - lol!). She got to the store and was so overwhelmed at the grits/quick grits/instant grit selections, all she could do is leave. And wait til she had lunch with someone she trusted enough to give her good grit advice!!! So I guided her in the correct grit direction, and she's probably happily eating grits 3x a day for all I know!!

Ok, Dixie and Knit Wit - can I stay south of the Mason Dixon??

Mama Fox - who's Granny grew up in Morgan City, LA, and you don't get any more "South" than that!

Y'know, all it took with the Northern born Highlander was giving him some with butter and salt (I didn't bother mixing in the scrambled eggs and sausage like I normally do) and he was completely ready for it. Then again, the Highlander just likes FOOD in general, so maybe that's it.

I find it's easiest for folks up here to compare it to Cream of Wheat, but they usually do that with sweet stuff, not salty. It's odd.

Oh, well...guess I'm gonna have to straddle the Mason Dixon for the rest of my life, 'cause much as I love grits (still my comfort food on weekends and when I'm sick), I'm clean DONE with 90+ weather where I HAVE to go to school and all FOR 20 below where they close down the whole county and NO ONE goes out! :-)

*points* don't make me take you back down there! I've changed all the locks, rerouted all the passages and tunnels, and installed tons of traps and monsters! a rescue mission will take far more longer than last time, and have far more casulties!

I detect a bit of AQ fun like from the "olden days" LOL

a dungeon rescue can be dangerous but with good help...
wonder if I could still recruit helpers and rescuers on short notice if needed?!
I worry it would be a solo mission.
naw... I bet some of these folks still have our backs
knit wit is reliable, she came to my chocolate induced stupor rescue :)
anyone else from the old dungeon rescue days lurking here?

*pointing at Shiloh*
now don't get yourself caught and shackled down there...
if you need some good food and care... all ya gotta do is ask
you don't gotta go get yourself bound and gagged, then rescued to get trout and beer ;)

Mmmm - fried eggs over easy on my grits please. There's a restaurant here that does the most amazing eggs over easy and grits. The guy who cooks/owns it is Greek (and I work with his wife, also Greek), so it shows that grits really do not know geographical boundries ;-))

Quote Oh, well...guess I'm gonna have to straddle the Mason Dixon for the rest of my life, 'cause much as I love grits (still my comfort food on weekends and when I'm sick),

At least you can buy them in NY. My brother (in NYC) takes these weird spells with food and whenever he's visiting south, he's makes these strange forays to the grocery. Lately he's been buying White Lily flour. For a while it was this certain gravy mix (he made me MAIL it to him!!) and then it was those fried onions in a can (Durkee, Dundee?). Swears he can't find these in NYC......

So, Sprite, if they ever stop selling grits up north, just hollar, and I'll overnight you some!! ;-))

When I go to the south (S. Carolina, Georgia area) I always have to stop at a roadside stand somewhere to get boiled peanuts. I could probably make them at home in Ohio, but it just wouldn't be the same.
And whenever I'm in my mom's hometown in South Carolina I have to stop at Rachel's to get fried chicken with buttermilk biscuits and string beans. It's the best I've ever tasted! (Well...not as good as Mom's, but her health doesn't allow her to cook those big fancy meals anymore.)
Mmmmmm... I can't wait til Sunday Supper, I fixin' that for dinner tonight!
