Way back then...

I was cleaning out the junk closet today, and the kids found a couple of facinating items. In fact, they've been playing with two of them since they got home from school. The space age, attention grabbing archeological finds? A whisk broom and kitchen timer. Why do I buy toys?

Remember the olden days, before microwave timers and dust busters?

Can you believe it?! I used to have to get off the couch to turn the station on the tv. Channels 2-4-7-17 & 29 was all there was : )

Ah, you must have been a city boy. With our antenna, out in the hills, we could pick up Canadian channels too. Of course, you used to have to turn the dial to change the direction of the antenna...

I remember having to turn not just one, but two dials to watch tv. First I had to decide on the frequency the channel would be found on and then you had to decide on the channel itself. Fun Fun!!!

Oh yes...I recall the old UHF/VHF knob...then the channel knob. Our knod broke though so we had to change the channels with a pair of needle nose pliers. :0)

And here I thought ALL televisions needed the needle nosed pliers - there was a knob? Really?

Was your antenna like ours and had aluminum foil squeezed around the top of each ear? and todays kids complain about there being nothing to watch on TV....geesh!

In our area we got 8 10 13 and 21. On a good night we got 2 from Buffalo. Then they added WUHF and it became channel 31 (FOX).

we didn't have needlenose pliers, had to use regular ones. and then, if they moved to the other position on the jaw so it opened wider but wouldn't close all the way, I'd always pinch my hand trying to change channels....

we had three network and two pbs stations (because of having two universities within broadcast range. I was so excited when we first started getting the uhf stations.

LOL, not the giant console tv that was almost as big as my kitchen island.

But we did have one of those...but it was like a 9 " black and white...we watched the three stooges late at night on it. We always had to shimmy the antennae and squeeze and rearrange the foil because the singal was worse at night.

I remember and can identify with all the things you're talking about... the needlenose plier channel changers.... the foil on the rabbit ears... etc.
I was 13 when I got my first TV in my room. It was a zenith with a round screen... and a handle on top that went from the front to the back.

I often joke that the only reason I had kids was so I didn't have to get up to turn the TV channel myself.... then they invented REMOTE CONTROLS...... *lol*... if only I had known !!

I went to a PTA meeting last night and one of the teachers was reporting that one of the grades (2nd?) was supposed to interview their elders over the Thanksgiving holidays. She said that some of the children noted that they probably didn't have toilets or electricity back then. :-)

I'm 46. In my entire life, I have only had a private TV in my room for about six months, when I was fifteen. I didn't have a color TV until I was 21, and that was a nearly dead set taken by my parents from a renter in lieu of partial rent that month. The picture was always fuzzy on that set. I never had cable until I was 25. I didn't have a TV with a remote or a good color TV until I was 26. I only got my first HDTV in March of this year, and that only because our old TV died and flat screen HD was the least expensive choice to replace it.

I have a small computer desk filled with board games...now that's entertainment!

I'm not much younger than you and have never had a tv in my room in my entire life. As a kid, I wanted one. As an adult, I chose not to have one. When you are an adult, the bedroom is only for 2 things, IMO, and watching tv isn't one of them. :) I'm thankful my husband feels the same way.
