Unpleasant find while boxing today...

This isn't for the faint of heart, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had the misfortune of stumbling across something like this while letterboxing.

My friend and I took her daughter to box at Hubbard Park in Meriden today. It was cold, but it was a good day to box. We were looking for one of THE APEMAN's boxes and saw a woman with some bags. We thought she was planting a box because she was looking around her. We hid behind a tree (which had a box near it) and watched her. She had some sort of packet so we thought for sure she had planted something. And then she took out a rattle and shook it at the cardinal directions. We realized quickly that she was doing some sort of ritual and took off. I kind of thought maybe she was just disguising that she was hiding something.

We went off, found a bunch of boxes and then came back to the tree she had been at. We looked and didn't see anything but when I peeked behind the tree I found a recently killed, large rat with... well, let's just say it was killed by a person. Clearly. We don't think it was a coincidence either...

To say we were creeped out is the understatement of the year. Her daughter THANKFULLY did not see and we ushered her out of there really fast.

Has anyone else seen anything strange like this before while boxing?

That story tops my story of catching two adults "in the act"...in terms of strangeness. I go to that park frequently and I've NEVER seen something like that before.

And, slightly off-topic. Have they re-opened the road around the duck pond yet? Last time I drove by it was blocked off.

Nope, it was still blocked off. I think they're setting up the Christmas lights? Not sure. We parked at the lot by the old skating house/duck pond.

If you go to the park then you'll know exactly where it was I saw it. She was right in the open. You know when you go to the entrance road that goes around the duck pond? There's the wooden bridge slightly off the road to your left. She was at a tree right by the stream maybe thirty-fifty feet from the bridge (I'm bad at judging distance). Anyone walking by could see her.

Ok, AB, I'll bite.

And what would the purpose of this ritual be? Is it only effective in Connecticut? Why would you want to see this hundreds of times? Does it have to be a rat? How old is this ritual? Do the rats suffer? Have you seen that woman before, and did she do the ritual correctly? Do they name the rat before they perform this ritual? Do they chant something like "Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho"? Can anyone perform this ritual, or do you have to be liscensed? How much does it cost?

Inquiring minds don't really want to know...

Possibly a Santeria ritual. Cairbbean Catholic influenced religion. Not sure of spelling. Down here in Florida larger animals are used. Goats, pigs, chickens...

If it is that, is such a public location used often? I mean, it was right in the open.

Well, if that's what she was doing, then the rat's sacrifice may have been a good one. The way the storm was handled was ridiculous. NOT that I believe it is the fault of any of the workers who came out and were restoring lines. No, I think it goes above them, as it usually does.

Have you seen that woman before, and did she do the ritual correctly?

EXACTly!!! i mean, was she fully clothed or will it not work because she was supposed to be nekkid as a jay bird in the full moonlight - and aren't you glad you didn't run into THAT???

~tigs (who will absotively posilutely NOT be performing this ritual in a park near you!)

They were saying there was some sort of "magical energy" flow yesterday - being 11/11/11. There was even a news report saying that they closed the Sphinz (or one of the great pyramids) because they believed people would go their to worship yesterday.

I went to visit my mother, who informed me that it was now The Age of Aquarius...and then she kept asking me to sing the song...

My husband has seen remains in another park, he was asked to identify it as human or animal....but you'd think they would try to go somewhere more remote... gross to just leave it there....

Wow, I can't imagine finding remains and not knowing what it was. A few weeks ago I found the legbones of a deer and yesterday while planting a box I found a random, massive bone in a tree. No idea what it was from, but I suspect it was possibly a dogs chew toy? I mean, it was too big to be anything that lives near me... I hope.

The remains he had to identify were just some organs.... intestines and stuff. So he cut it open and found grass and stuff inside... definitely not human, which was all the police were worried about. He was thinking a pig or something.

If a large bone was up in a tree, maybe a bobcat or something dragged it up there?

Finding organs... eww. I think I'd rather find bones...

I should clarify that the bone wasn't HIGH in the tree. It was a two sister and it was wedged in the split, probably a little less than shoulder height for me, and I'm 5'5" approx. It looked more like someone put it there, but who knows.

Maybe if they had a dog like mine, they probably did! My dogs would occasionally emerge from the woods with a deer bone in their mouth, so after prying it away from them, I'd put it up high in a tree so they (or other dogs) couldn't get it again....quite a simple explanation really ;-)

I can't get this out of my head since the day you wrote it. Every time I heard a noise in the woods this morning, I was afraid that I would look up and see a gnarly old woman shaking maraca's.

Thankfully, all the noises I kept hearing were deer running around :-)

It definitely taught me not to go boxing alone! I wasn't this time, but I can't help but think about how much more freaky it would be had I been alone!

Hahaha, awesome. I freaked myself out by deer one time, too. But I was so close to civilization I really shouldn't have been worried... I think... :/

It's the more urban parks that I avoid when alone. Way out on a trail in the middle of nowhere, I feel safe.
