Henta virus???

Man, I just got over this NASTY virus. I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on Friday night, sat down to play some Sims 2 and early Friday morning (as I was going to bed...Sims 2 is CRAZY addictive!), I felt that sandwich sitting in the pit of my stomach causing some trouble. I didn't want to wake the Highlander, so I tossed and turned for about 3 hours trying to find a comfortable position without hurling. By 4 in the morning, I had to go and worship the Porcelain God. Folks, I was like some really disgusting firework display...amazing action at both ends simultaneously! :-O It only lasted for 24 hours, but I was totally wiped out. I'm just now starting to feel like myself again.

Has anyone else had this? The doctor told the Highlander it was called the Henta virus or something, but he doesn't remember. I really want to know the name so I can warn folks at school about it (plus I want to be sure I'm not going to pass it on if I go to work in the morning).

Sounds like the same thing that my 6 year old daughter and I had a couples months ago. It was really bad:( Know how you felt. Weak for a few days afterward too. My husband took care of both of us and never got it. Guess he was immune since he was working at a pediatrics office then. Who knows.
Get well soon!!!

just asked my husband about the Henta virus. He doubts that's what you had. It is a "plague" like virus carried by rats. Killed lots of people I think either in the 1980's or 1990's (not sure).

I think that was the virus that struck really hard in the Southwestern states around 1990. There were many deaths and there wasn't much they could do for those who contracted it except wait.

I've had a similar thing to what you had and it is nasty. My doctor said it was a "stomach virus"--the lovely catch-all phrase for when they really don't know why your stomach is so messed up. Hope you're better soon.

what a random diagnosis....did you mention anything to the doctor that you neglected to share with us on aq, like having a house full of mouse poop? (no, really, don't answer that, your first post had enough over-sharing.)

Sounds like what was going on around here (WNC) practically on an epidemic level. The health department sent out a notice that went out to all public school kids (at least in my kids school). I think I tossed (sorry about that word useage Sprite ;-)) the paper, but I believe it was called rotovirus, or something starting with an "r". It's basically a horrible stomach (and related parts) flu that lasts about 24 hours. The creepy thing is you are contagious (with this particular virus) for up to 48 hours *after* you feel better. So the gist of the paper that the health department sent out was wash your hands after coming within 6 inches of each and every person you encounter in daily life. And after you have touched any surface that any other person may have touched in the past 72 hours.

Glad to hear you are better, Sprite. I always look at this type of virus as a weight loss opportunity. Not implying you need it, as I've never met you ;-)) However, I need several weeks of this type of weight loss opportunity ;-))

That apparently didn't come out the way you meant it.

You know according to OSHA, there is a minimal limit for how much mouse poop can be packaged in the foods that are sold in every grocery store in this nation.

I would think the minimum limit would be ZERO.

I'm more worried about what the maximum limit might be, though! ;o)

Not to get too technical, or too gross, but the contents of our food is regulated by the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). The Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) concerns itself with the well-being of the workers.

OSHA is too busy trying to keep people from killing themselves on the job to oversee mouse poop in food.

See, that's why I wanted to know if anyone else had had this...he's not sure of the name, either (husbands get a little flustered when they're on the phone and holding the wife's hair back!). I wonder what it's called, then?

LOL See, and I thought I was the ONLY one who thought like this! Earlier Friday evening, I checked my weight and I was closer to my pre Weight Watchers days than I had ever been. Now, I'm back down to the midway point (I've gained back about 15 pounds since I stopped going to the meetings, but at least it wasn't 30!)

I think lisascenic was referring to the fact that the Hantavirus is transmitted to people when they come in contact with mouse or rat poop. Not that it was somehow in the processed food. That said, I have heard about those maximum limits for "foreign objects" in food. I always figured it would be worst for things like raisins and dried herbs, because, since they are dried objects, you can't just wash the ickies off.

My DH has refused to clean the garage for the past three years because he once found rat poops in a back corner, and therefore we obviously have the virus hanging out in the garage. Never mind that I go in there several times each week to get to the washing machine! When I have threatened to clean it out myself he gets into an even bigger panic. Can you say hypochondriac? :P

This is pure genius! "We can't clean it, because it's filthy." Why didn't *I* think of this argument? <g>

I think it is the Noro-virus. There aren't many survivors of the Hanta virus--it's similar to the Black Plague from Europe, transmitted by rodent droppings and quite ever-present in the US Southwest which is why folks recommend you don't dig up a lot of Southwestern dirt and inhale it as it's usually in there. Once you inhale it it's usually pretty deadly.

The Noro-virus is a stomach virus that hits folks suddenly and typically lasts for 24-72 hours with extreme stomach cramping, vomiting and all the other 'unpleasantries'. It's often confused with food poisoning but it's just a fast spreading virus that is really difficult to avoid. I'm sure our family's had the Noro-virus a few times, unfortunately. It's usually those events where you swear off food for the rest of your life and then a few days later you become friends again with food although you never really 'trust' food again. It hit me a few hours after I went to a Burger King in Central WA and I haven't even gone near one of those sandwiches since. But there's no way it could have been BK because both my kids got it first and neither of them ate there--it just took a few hours long to 'hit' me. It just hit them faster.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

This sounds more like what he might've been talking about. I haven't been around any mouse poop (although we DO have some mice about) and I DEFINITELY have no interest in PB & J anymore!

This post gives whole new meaning to the board Yakking it Up.

My advice is to stay away from Yakking it up in old houses with wide pine floors.
My children specialize in "grouting" the floor!

sprite- you amuse me. its some ungodly hour in teh morning and im reading about your love fest with a ceramic confessional. needless to say my class is staring at me funny cause i cant stop laughing.

ok deep-breathes...but i fully understand your pain/ love. i had gotten "in love" a few weeks ago. i hadnt exactly eaten for severla days- i was too stressed out and busy with the end of our quarter in school- little sleep and the only thing i really had in me was coffee. and by the time i got homei was in extreme pain and freezing despite being under severla heavy blankets. eventually i was forced (by cq) to eat a few crackers nad promtly began the toliet hugging. luckily i didnt have that much in me so its wasnt too bad...

but still it was a horrible way to end a very stressful week.
but hey we lose weight :)

we miss you sprite and feel better (i cant imagine these bored without reading you "i didnt need to know that" comments.)

I had this once, it was truly truly terrible and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. In fact when Sprite first wrote about this it was the first thing I thought of!

I was sick for 3 days, I'd roll out of bed and that's as far as I'd make it. My poor boyfriend just cleaned and cleaned up after me. I ended up in the ER with a saline drip to rehydrate me eventually, only they gave me some drug and it made my arm burn so bad going in!!! My aunt (a nurse) told me it was the same drug they give heroin addicts that are coming down and have stomach complaints so that they hopefully remember the pain of "getting thru it" so that they won't want to do it again and that there were other drugs they could have given me instead. Why they felt the need to give me a heroin addict medicine is beyond me, but a lot of things at our local hospital are beyond me too (like why I get 6 bills for one visit--yet they can't keep obviously dirty laundry out of the corners by the elevator).

My nephew had this when we gathered for Christmas a few weekends ago. Within 24 hours, my brother, my mother, my aunt, and I each had it as well. I couldn't even take my daughter to day care as I couldn't be that far from the bathroom. I also would never wish this on anyone!! I just thank God my daughter didn't get it, too. I'm also thankful that Cinderella occupied her for most of the afternoon, as I simply could not care for my child. And I believe it is true that you are contagious *after* your symptoms go away. Several co-workers got it after I came back to work. I'm not saying they got it from me...

Ugh! This sounds alot like something that I got a couple of years ago! We had some friends visiting for my parents anniversary party from Florida, and they thought they had food poisioning! My whole family had it, but my Dad and I got the worst of it, since we came in the closest contact with it! My daughter yakked on me ( then she was over it! ), and my Dad got it from cleaning up after the friends!

I thought I was gonna die! Knocking on wood that we don't have to go through that again anytime soon!
