Squirrel wasn't a staple for dinner at our house, but we had it more than once. Along with terrapin soup (Sorry, Ryan, YT and all other turtle friends on AQ!), rabbit, venison, duck and beaver (I was in fourth grade and didn't notice when my mom answered "roast beav" when I asked what was for dinner. I thought she'd said "roast beef" of course!)

Anyway, my mom wasn't a big fan of all the game but my dad would bring it home, and having been raised during the depression, Mom is loathe to waste anything so she always tried to do something with it. One night she'd had enough of the squirrels, so she fixed one each for my brother and my dad, and served them whole (minus the head, of course), their little feet sticking up. That was the last time they were brought home!

Oh, we also had squid one night, with a sauce my dad tried to make from the "ink" of it. It was roundly booed, and even Dad didn't have more than two bites!

My upbringing was so dull. Thank you for all the great stories, helps get through the day!

I just re-read this line again and got the giggles from imagining someone "slurping" in the big furry tail of a squirrel. Or spilling some on themselves and someone else politely saying "um, excuse me, but you have a little bit of...squirrel, is that? On your collar. Yeah, right there."

If it moved in the woods while my dad was sitting in a treestand, it got shot!!

If it got shot, my mom had to cook it!!

It's amazing, there's a recipe for just about everything!!

You and my husband must of been raised in the same neighborhood. He's had his share of squirrel and snapper stew. It got to the place, when we'd visit I would be afraid to ask what was for dinner. Who knows what animal she would come up with. With a little wild poke on the side of course.

anyone wanting to rid my bird feeder of the pleasingly plump squirrels can come on over (we will just close the shades so we don't have to see it! ).

Six Stars ** in NH with squirrels that rival the sea gulls in size from all that bird food they eat**
