Anyone interested in a Custom LB Bag Insert?

I've been looking around and NOTHING seems "ideal" for what I would like to use. So after talking with Bob, we are going to make something. Way back in my younger days, I taught classes in bag making so creating something that is ideal seems only natural to me.

I'm basically designing an insert which can go into almost any backpack. The insert will either fold in half and zip closed, or roll and have ties to secure it. I want various pockets and straps to hold down a variety of LBing tools and supplies.

Overall, I'm sketching an outer leaf that holds stamps, markers, ink pads, log books, basic repair supplies. This one will have a water resistant/proof backing so you can open it up and lay it down without concern for your precious cargo. Then each additional leaf will be customized. ie carving, logbook making, art supplies... etc. They will attach to the primary shell (outer leaf) so that everything stays together, or you can roll them up and carry them individually. The name will be clearly visible on the outside so if you have more than one bundle in your pack, you can easily identify the one you are looking for.

Finally, I'm trying to decide if it should have a velcro leaf to hold patches for easy removal, trading, etc. Also, what other leaves would people be interest in?

So this is a bag that you fill with your lbing supplies and can stick it into whatever bag your grab for the day? I love that idea. I also can not find the perfect bag. We dont always take it all when we go boxing...depends on so much...time, weather, how many we plan to find, if we bring the dog, lunch, water, etc....some days we just toss the log book and stamp in the car and do a driveby. Other days weather permitting we pack the whole lunch and go for the day. I dont like carrying a big backpack when there is only a stamp, some markers and a log book in it. I need to be better about carrying box first aid stuff.

But having a bag that it could all be contained in would be great, to keep at home as well. All my stuff is spread out on my counter in the craft room and it gets a bit jumbled.

I would love to see what sort of designs you come up with. I'm no designer, but have often said i wish I could design my own purse, for the same reason...lots of inside pockets.

Good luck with it...send pictures!!

How fun! I'd definitely be interested as I've not come up with the perfect system yet (although my more organized husband keeps trying). Surely there's a better way than keeping my ink pads in a plastic bag.

Such talented people hang around here. A velcro leaf for patches would be fun.

Yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind.

Quote …be great, to keep at home as well

Or to take to gathers, I’d like to be able to spread out without making a mess! Lol

Will do! I have sketches in the works and will have a prototype by the end of next week. After a few tweaks, it’ll be ready for production.

Ok, that goes into the plan then. Thanks. I'm new to the hobby/sport/obsession, so didn't know if this would be a good idea or not.

This is a fab idea! So will you be taking orders, or posting directions or something in between?

I'll be taking orders and pics will be posted on a Web page. As a crafter, I know that others are going to want to build their own <grin>, but I'm not sure I'll give away all the directions.

The Great Green Guy in our Sky suggested that I use a Web site to make ends meet. I was thinking that there's not really a place that sells anything like this, so it's a start. We'll see where it goes from here. Thanks Oh Shelled One. *bowing respectfully*

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with. I've been looking for something that will hold my markers...in elastic loops or something...and haven't been able to find anything that would work both for my markers AND fit in my backpack. I'm also not a seamstress in any stretch of the imagination...so it would HAVE to be something I buy! LOL

Looking forward to seeing the prototypes!

I've been using nested makeup bags to carry everything, and a small box which has an elastic band attached to it. But this insert bag sounds wonderful. I can't wait to see the prototype!

How about both... I like the idea about rolling and tying, But at the same time I wouldn't want anything to fall out the ends if I hadn't secured it properly. so if it zipped, folded, rolled then tied that would be great!!!

just something to consider. But its your thing, you know whats best. ;)

It's a possibility. Let me see is it's feasible to roll one loaded with supplies and with a zipper along the edges. once I've selected materials. I'll think "flexible durability" when I'm shopping. (grin)

What an interesting concept. I'd like to see some pics.

For my suggestion. How about a roll up table? There is a camp table that rolls up for storage and then unrolls and becomes a solid table top, you then attach the legs. I'm thinking something like this but with out the legs.

I've seen these. If I remember right, they are aluminum so they don't weigh very much. The one I saw was big so it would be bulky. Do they come in different sizes?

Short answer: yes, we hope to do this.

I found a spray for waterproofing fabrics. If this works as it claims, we can use a variety of upholstery fabrics to offer style and color choices. I have a bolt of tapestry and one of brick red velvet to play around with for the prototypes. Eventually I'd like to offer a leather one as well.

Well folks, I didn't think I was going to get time to actually construct it today, but I did. Woohoo!

I've uploaded pictures for all those who wanted to see them to http://shadohart.googlepages.com/home

OH, and I know I said it would be upholstery fabric, but this was in the only bag of fabric I have left to my name and it was soooooo shiny! I just had to make shiny pockets on the first one. LOL

Way to go, draygonflies! Get your price list and ordering info up there and I'll bet you have more business than you can handle! I'd like to see a vinyl/waterproof backing so if I open it up on a wet table I don't have to worry.

Thanks for doing this for us,

Very cool! I'd like it even more with one of the stamp pockets a bit larger....for those of us who have big signature stamps. Or for maintenance stuff. Many of us prolific planters like to have extra baggies and wipes with us....

And instead of tieing closed...which takes time and nimble fingers...how about a quick and easy velcro closure? Then even a kid could clean up....

Quote vinyl/waterproof backing

I found a spary that claims to make any fabric water resistant. I've treated the fabrics that I'm using, but full scale testing is going on today. i.e. submersion, laying in a puddle, etc. I want to see how long it holds up before water seeps into the fibers. Simply adding a layer of clear vinyl over the back wouldn't be a problem, if that's what you prefer.

Thanks,
Tee

I have another option for a waterproof exterior, oilcloth. This fabric is fused to vinyl already, but I've never bothered with it because it's usually so ugly. However, I just found a supplier with solid colors. Let me do some research. I'll add a color choice page to the site and you can see pictures of what's available.

I'll also have some carriers that I've picked fabrics for and are ready for shipping soon.

Thanks for all the interest and ideas!
