A fine mesh....that would allow for condensation to escape.

depending on what you like, here's an idea. at a function i went to recently, there were water bottle holders made of a strap-like thing similar to a lanyard that you hang around your neck. at the end was a rubber O-ring type of stretchy material that you stretch around the neck of the water bottle, and that was pretty handy. depending on if you like it bouncing against your back or your belly/chest as you walk. could be put around the neck and one shoulder, like those across-the-chest bags people carry. then it would dangle at the side.

I've also seen bottle holders that are a solid flat plastic piece that you slide into your back pocket. part of it stuck out at a perpendicular angle with a notch cut out for a bottle neck to slide into.

i don't know where to buy either one. prolly easy enough to find on line somewhere. but the one with the strap and the rubber ring would be easy to make, i bet, with whatever you could find to go around your neck (a lanyard?) and a rubber band.

my 2 cents.

Hmm, thanks. I just did a little google for "water bottle holder" and found both of what you were talking about, I think. I like the clip-- that way I could put it on my bag (without any extra sewing, because I really am doing enough of that already with this project) or on my person when I'm not letterboxing. Maybe they'll have them at Sport Chalet.

I'm exploring options for creating something to carry around the LB goodies. Do you mind sharing what you are working on?

I'll probably share pictures when I'm completely done with it. Basically, I have a pretty simple messenger bag with a single shoulder strap that I've been using for my letterboxing. I'm attached to it, but know it's not ideal, especially for longer hikes. So far what I've done is add padding to the back of it, which makes it a lot more comfortable to carry and gives it more structure instead of just being a floppy pile of cloth like it was, and I created two padded, adjustable backpack straps. I used overall latches and buttons to make the straps removable, and that way I can still use it as a messenger bag when I want to, or I can tuck the messenger strap into the bag, latch on the straps and use it as a backpack instead.

Besides that I want to put some dividers on the inside so I can keep all my different stuff more organized and not have it shifting around and find some way to carry a water bottle, whether it's sewing a pocket or two onto the outside or finding one of those clips (Sport Chalet failed me on that).

Last year at GS day camp another leader was experimenting with a crocheted bottle holder she made. I thought it looked perfect - simple, convenient, not bulky or unwieldy , though she admitted to making it a bit larger than she should have, having not taken "stretch" into account. However, she invented the pattern as she went along and at the time didn't have it written up enough to share.

I'd bet though, if you were such a crafty type, you could google a pattern for one.
