This reminds me of a couple of things my dad used to do with us when my siblings and I were growing up in interior Alaska. He had a small clear paperweight with three small pieces of jade in it, and he would hide it somewhere in the house for us to find. The only rule was that from some angle, it had to be visible. He was very creative in hiding it--we had fiberglass insulation with a foil covering, and when the paperweight was hidden directly in front of this covering, it became nearly invisible. And he'd often hide it under a bed or piece of furniture where it was more difficult.

He also did treasure hunts for us, where we had to follow several clues to get to the eventual prize, which could be anything from a few cookies (one for each of us) or some small trinkets.

Sometimes the treasure hunt would initiate from a chalkboard we had. He would sign himself as the radio superhero character, "The Shadow." So we'd go by what became known as "the Shadow board," notice that something was written on it, and start the hunt. The message would be something like, "Where are the cookies? Only the Shadow knows." He did this one for years, up until the time we were teenagers, and we never once caught him at it--he often would write the message on the board during a time we were all together, and we would have sworn that he'd been with us the entire time.

What awesome memories!!!!

As someone with parents (and more specifically a father) that I hold up as an example of what kind of parent NOT to be, I love hearing personal experiences like this..... I'm filing it away to use with my little monkey!! He'd love it!

Thanks!

He really was. I think he would have liked this hobby--everybody here is so creative, I just love reading what people come up with for boxes.

That makes me feel great--knowing that more kids will get to have some of the same fun memories I have.
