how to get box ready

Okay, I'm a total newbie. I carved a stamp, I'm scouting out locations, thinking up clues, and tomorrow I plan to get the box ready to hide. Where might I find that camo tape I've seen on the boxes I've found? Also, I think a few may have been spray painted? I would really appreciate any tips on this. thanks!

it is exciting isn't it?

We bought camo tape at WalMart (hunting/camping department) they probably have the spray paint there too, even though we haven't bought or used it yet, we want to in the spring!

HAVE FUN!!!!

I got mine at WalMart, too. But recently all of the stores near here have been sold out since it's deer hunting season. Hope yours has it in stock.

I bought the small cloth tape roll instead of the duct tape roll because the other was shiny and didn't look as real. However, many, who have done this longer than I, like it just fine.

Thanks for giving back to the letterboxing community. Cath is right..the tape is at Walmart's. Either in the tape section or the hunting section..depending on your local season. DON"T buy the cloth camo tape...only the duct tape style works.

I use the Camo colored Fusion Paint. This is paint made just for plastic and holds up really well. I cover all the flat areas of the box that I can with tape, then spray just the bare edges and spots. Saves a lot of paint this way.

Black duct tape and paint works well for dark recessed hiding spots. And silver duct tape that has been allowed to weather for awhile outside ( plant your boxes right on the lawn in the backyard to "season" them) and they will blend in really well among concrete or rocks.

My local Ace Hardware carries both duct tape and electrical tape in good 'boxing colors - like brown and green...that's I've made work. I like that it's pretty sticky, particularly when I wrap it around on itself.

I buy mine at Walmart..but some True Value stores carry it too. Look in the spray paint section. Fusion paint was designed for painting plastic lawn furniture and I've found it works really well on a rigid container such as a Lock n Lock. I haven't had as much luck with it on a flexible container such as those throw-away food containers.

Home Depot and Lowes also have the plastic furniture paint. The hobby stores also have the spray paint for plastic models that works well but a bit more expensive. I bought camo tape at Gander Mountain and Academy Sports. I Don't shop Wal-Mart.

Here I am replying to my own post......

Just a heads up on the camo tape. Make sure you DON'T get the kind that goes on guns and bows. This kind is made to be removed easily and won't hold up on boxes.

thanks for all the ideas. i have already checked walmart, and i think they're out right now, but i will try one of the other stores. i can't believe how long it takes (this is my first box) to do everything before planting it! it's fun though.

i also just realized that i carved my stamp but i didn't put any backing foam on it. what kind of foam do you use and can you use any old glue to affix?

I bought a 6-pack of Foam "door hangers" like are used in Bible Schools for crafts and I also used Liquid Nails perfect glue #1.

Thanks to everyone who suggested both of those previously.

Since you are REALLY NEARBY.....where do you get liquid nails glue #1 and what carving material are you gluing to the foam door hangers. I also bought the door hangers at the dollar store, just bought some glue at Lowes supposed to glue rubber and plastic, etc, but didn't stick AT ALL (using pink stuff and door hangers which I'm guessing are both plastic substances.....

If your Wal-Mart doesn't have it (ours doesn't - hard to believe here in the deep south where lots of people like to shoot at things!) try a sporting goods store. We got some at Academy today.

DO you have an ACMoore nearby? THey have both the foam (same as the dollar store ones, I'm sure ;-)) and Liquid Nails #1. Michaels might?? I've not checked there, but on the theory that they have a lot of the same stuff as ACMoore.......

I've used E6000 but really don't like it - the foam buckles at first, so you have to keep pressing down, or dry it under weight. After all that hassle, it seems to hold ok though. Oh, and it stinks too, but living on a farm, I don't obsess much about smells......

I actually found it at Walgreen's. It is not with the regular school glues, but in the household's section. I think it was just one row over.

GREAT! Since we don't have Michaels or ACMoore, or Hobby Lobby nearby, I was hoping to check Home Depot, but Walgreens sounds much easier!! Thanks!

p.s. of course, that is still a 30 minute drive and I consider it nearby! Ah, the trade offs of living in the country!

I hear you--Five years ago we lived in rural PA--a good 30 mins. to anything. Now we live in a small town in NY--we have Walmart and KMart about 15 minutes away, but to get to a mall or to Michaels or any of those places it is a 35-40 minute drive. It drives me crazy to get the 40 % coupons for the craft stores and know that the advice is by one thing this week with the coupon, then come back next week with a new coupon and get another thing... I am lucky to get there once a month!!

This is a few days later and you may have already received tons of replies, but camo tape can be found at Academy Sports in the Southeast. It's not with the other duct tape, but rather found with the camo equipment (by the backpacks, thermoses, etc.) Happy hunting!
