The Official Re-Challenge of the Sprite Rules
Board: State: New York
Jan 9, 2007 9:20pm
Alright, since it looks like more folks want in, here's the official rules for this urban boxing game!
The challenge is to try and hide a letterbox in a megastore near you to see how long it lasts. The box that lasts the longest will get...uh...SOMETHING good! :-) For this game, we'll define megastore as any store that has a built in restaurant/snack bar/someplace where the finder can sit down and eat while they stamp and still be in the store itself (ie. Big K, Wegmans', Super Wal-mart, etc.). Malls are okay, so long as the box is in the mall itself, not one of the shops.
Rule # 1: To be involved in the plan, you MUST let us (The Sprite & the Highlander) know when you've planted your box and post it here on AQ so we can keep track of whose boxes are still active. Boxes must be planted by January 31.
Rule # 2: We'll check weekly on progress. The proof of the box's longevity will be the last finder. If no one has found it that week, you can check to see if it's there yourself and let us know. The Highlander and I will post the boxes still out there each week to keep everyone updated.
Rule # 3: Try to avoid posting the store's name in the clues so that people doing a search won't end up here digging up your box. Try and go with a thinly disguised clue (like Wig -i + e +man's!) After all, you want it to last, right?
Can't think if we're forgetting anything else, so ask questions, please!

This challenge sounds very exciting... is it for New Yorkers only? Any thoughts to making this a national challenge?

You can do as many as you like (since we're not stopping anyone from MAKING boxes), but you can only enter ONE in this contest (otherwise, you'd significantly up your odds of winning in a rah-ther unfair manner!) LOL

Ooh! I just might be able to do this. I have a stamp that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. I just need to make the logbook and decide on a location (lots of stores/malls to choose from, specific location will be the hard part).
I think I'll start reconnoitering tonight:)

Is there a way to name these boxes, similar to how PLBs named, like "Sprite's Big Box Challenge: insert name of box here?" I think I might like to do this, and want to name accordingly.

That's up to everyone else. How do you guys want to do this? I don't want to tell everyone to slap my name on a box just because I said it'd be neat to hide one in a store. What if we just added the word "Challenge" somewhere in the title?

How about Megastore Challenge instead? Seems to be less pompous on my (the Sprite's) part and more what it's about.

What a cool idea. I'm glad I stumbled onto this post. And I'll be back in PA just in time to plant one. Expect some competition from down here in Steeler Country.

I disagree. It was your challenge, after all, and you didn't name it so the title could hardly be considered pompous on your part. Be proud to take credit for this great idea of yours, o Spritely One! You do deserve it, you know...

Or, for the sake of history and tradition, the original name: "The Challenge o' the Sprite." I for one think it's kinda catchy. :-)

And I will just look quietly old and insane while you look like another one of today's violent youth that goaded me into such terrible goings-on (I'll even use the words "goings-on" to ensure I sound good and old). Then I'll say "You know, officer, I think it's that reefer madness. Ann Margaret did that in Kitten With a Whip...such a terrible influence on our young people. Well, I must get to my bingo game...good day to you, officer and I hope you've learned a VALUABLE lesson, young woman!"
Yeahhhh....!

Okay, since Turtle McQ was the only one who actually took UP the challenge last time (including the Highlander and I!) we'll stick with her name for it.
So, anyone doing the megastore challenge just title the box Challenge O' the Sprite: Your Box Name. That way, I should be able to do a search and find all the boxes at once without needing some sort of tracker.
One other thing...try to make your choice of megastore something you can check on often. We need to check at least bi-weekly (that should help a little, Scout!) so we know the box is still around. Every two weeks we'll post to let you know which boxes are still in play. Some of these go pretty fast because the stores rearrange or clean up better than you expected (2 of Turtle McQ's 3 didn't last for more than a month, if I recall correctly), so it's important that we know who's really disappeared first for the title of Megastore Boxing Champion of the KNOWN UNIVERSE!!! (this really needs a clap of thunder and a reall echoey announcer guy voice!)

You don't have to do that...just edit the name of the box on Atlas Quest by adding "Challenge O' the Sprite:" to it at the front. You can leave it alone in the actual box...it won't matter at all!

Actually, 2 of the 3 lasted more than a year! The third was reported missing a little less than a month after planting (no doubt my fault for planting so close to the store office - duh). I finally retired the other two last year, one after 16 months and the other after 19. Can't wait to hear how long the new generation boxes hold up!
Have fun, everyone. :-)

So, does this mean we can hide a box in the ladies/mens room? I mean, under the sink might be a good option, but quite unfair to the boxers of the opposite sex. Odd question, I know. :::sheepish grin:::
And one other stupid question ... is the box disqualified if it is moved around in the store? Say you plant it on the salad bar at the grocery store, then the store moves the bar ... the box would still be there, but the clues might have to be changed?
Over-thinking it 'cos I'm just so darned excited,
