What would -really- be cool is a little fold up stool with a little fold up table that maybe comes with its own backpack style bag.

I like having my letterboxing bag be a bag at my hip with markers at hand rather than a back pack though.. I don't like to put my bag down on the ground to get the stuff out or even to use as a stool.

If I could pop open a little table and a little chair, THAT would rock. My mom has a camping size roll out folding table, I just need to find a mini one.

And I was beginning to think that I was the only one. I preferr a waist pack as well, I like to hike so a shoulder pack is not practical, I don't like to have to take my pack off just to get to something in it. (muchies or water bottles for the kids) Plus I need to keep my back free for when I need to give my 3yr old son a piggy back ride, which usually happens on the trail back and the waist pack serves as a seat for him with keeping the weight on my waist and not in my arms. (the little fart is dead weight, I don't think that he understands the concept of holding on or helping)

I'm thinking this would work well while stamping up if you sat on the stool with the backpack in front of you. Then everything looks like it would be accessible.

Problem is accessing things when you're hiking because it is still a backpack. Maybe I need to rethink this.

Yes! Good idea. :)

We just use lightweight boards as a table. Martini Man & I carry backpack/stool combos, so we don't have a problem fitting a small poly cutting board in our packs. Howeve my mom, Tabby Tales, sometimes prefers to carry a smaller bag. She found some very thin cutting boards and carries one slipped into an outside pocket of her small pack. We like using our "little tables" because it give us somewhere to set the stamps, ink and logbook when stamping and loggin in. We're usually sitting on our stools, but even if we take our small pack, we still have a little board in it because it works so well as a table.

Maybe one of those backpack frames with the shelf for the pack would work to harness him to. :)

I carry a small clipboard in my pack to have a flat surface to stamp in on.

I also carry a small clipboard. Actually carry two because we go letterboxing in groups. One holds the letterbox logbook, to be passed around. The other holds individual logbooks for those who need a hard surface behind a flexible logbook.

Speaking of surfaces . . .

I read in another post that some put foam behind the logbook sheet to help get a complete image of the stamp. If this really helps, I wondered if mounting a thin sheet of fun foam to one side of the clipboard would work for this, or if I should keep a sheet loose in my pack (maybe clipped to the clipboard) for this.

Well, I took the plunge and decided on the Kelty Redwing pack in red from R.E.I. After more extensive digging I discovered that "panel-loading" in backpackese means a zip-open back panel for easier access and organization for all your stuff. It also has lots of great pockets, water bottle holders and great reviews. It's pretty big but since I'm usually hauling logbooks and stamps for 5 of us plus an extra letterbox in case I find "the perfect spot" I figured big is good. Plus now it looks like I have to add a clipboard and collapsible stool, right?

Oh, I hope I made a good choice.
