... but then again, I am up at 2:30 (Central) too! Why? Well, I was up until 1:15 carving a postal and making the logbook, and then just as I was going to bed, my youngest came out of his room crying. I took him back to his bed and suddenly ... well, he tossed his cookies - repeatedly ... all over the bed, the floor, the wall, the door frame, the hall floor, my other child's door, the hall wall, the toilet lid, the bathtub, the bathroom floor, the shower curtain .... well, you get the picture. It took me well over an hour to clean it up.

All that to say, CQ! You're on to something! Have someone else's kids and then GIVE THEM TO HIM!!! :-) Cheers ... I think I will try to get some sleep.

well, you've posted to the right forum.
i'm not even going to tell you what my 4 yo has me up doing this fine morning.... :( somedays, i'd pay good money for a good pediatric cryogenic suspension unit....

Quote When did AQ get zip code based search? I want one of those!

Actually, I don't! I don't like the one on the Geocache site. It is OK if you know the Zip Code of where you are going but most people only know the Zip Code for where they live.

A Zip Code is really hard to look up as well. At least there are so many other brilliant ways of searching on AQ, on Geocache.com it seems to be about the only way.

I agree.
I do not see that a zip code search would help me in the least.
In my book it's no better than a county search.
I may know I wanna look for boxes in Charleston, SC but not know the zip or county...
so either of those searches is gonna do nothing but cost me time.

and yes...I know there are those of you rolling your eyes at me (LOL)
and saying that it only takes a moment of research. I know that...
but doing a city search doesn't even take that one extra moment.
:)

No worries, folks. I won't be replacing existing methods of searching--it would just be a new search option that (for some reason I don't understand) some people want available. *shrug*

It'd be way nicer to me than a county search.
I live in Kenmore, NY, which is just above Buffalo in Western New York.
That's Erie County, the county i generally look for boxes in on LbNA.
But within Erie County, there are at least 5 or more zip codes that I can think of, and probably more.
So, a zip code would be useful, since searching the whole of Erie county isn't as useful most of the time.

Plus, I have a nice map of the Metro bus system for Erie County and a little bit extra on the edges...and it has all the zip codes on it.

A zip code search (at least around here, I don't know how large an area zip codes cover elsewhere) would be nice because it gives a much smaller, compact search than the city search can at times. The seach search alawys gives wtihin a radius- x miles from a central point.
That means that sometimes boxes within the search are on opposite sides of the area being searched.
A zip code search might be better for determining which direction to box on a given day.

I guess I should clarify--a zip code search on AQ would also give you boxes within a given radius of the "center" of the zip code.

Atlas Quest would have no idea where the boundaries of a zip code are so it wouldn't be able to return boxes within a specific zip code--just boxes near the zip code's center point.

I'm not entirely sure what counts as the zip code's "center point," but I suspect it might be the post office that serves the zip code.

I might also point out--for those who feel the city search is too vague--if you know the latitude and longitude coordinates of your house or where you want to do the search from, you CAN search boxes based on that. Doesn't get more customizable than that. =) Most people don't know that information, though, which is why the default search is a city-based search rather than a coordinate based one.

Additionally, the search is only as good as the information that is provided. If someone only includes the city where a box is located and not the address, there's no way Atlas Quest can determine which zip code or where in the city the box is located. So for calculation purposes, AQ will use the city center as the point of reference (which, depending on the size of the city, could be off by a dozen miles or more).

Oh my! Yakking it up! I didn't make that connection! That is a RIOT!!! Thank you for making me laugh!

The little guy (known as Monk-E Boy in LBing, he's 4 years old, too) yakked it up approximately every 75 minutes for the rest of the night. He took a hiatus from 7:30 until 10:30 (when he got in one last hurrah), but of course, then my 7yo was rarin' to go! My cat nap on the couch was mildly helpful. I guess this is what I get for staying up until 1:30 doing LBing!! If I would go to bed like normal people then I wouldn't be nearly as delirious this morning!! ;-)
(Oh - I forgot to mention in the original post that my husband was working (package shipping companies are rather busy this time of year) a double, or maybe triple shift (he's not a driver, so don't panic) and did not get home until about 4:30am. So, he had to miss most of the fun. :-(

Oh, I am so dying to know what your four year old had you up doing at 3:54 (which I believe is 4:54 in NC?)

<waving arms wildly> I'm one of those who doesn't know her lat and long. I wish I did though cause it would make searching for more concise. Is there somewhere you can look up lat and long? I tried looking up the elevation at my house one time, so I could tell my boy's how high we are for the case of snow. But wasn't a very successful search:( Any help would be great:)

Thanks

Trish;)
