Trip to Herndon

I just heard that the people who write the curriculum for star writer's virtual school have pickd her to FLY TO VIRGINIA in January and tell her story at an employee appreciation dinner. They are flying us in on Wednesday Jan 10th. I looks like we may be in around 3-4 in the afternoon. They are keeping us busy pretty much all day on Thursday 11th. They are putting us up two nights at what sounds like a posh hotel, then giving me the choice of flying home on the 12th, or arranging my own roof and staying as long as Sunday 14th... which would give this Arizona girl the chance to see our nationa's capitol...if only I could get there adn find someplace to stay on a single parent budget. Any suggestions? Where's cheap to stay? What's the cheapest way to travel from Herndon to DC and back? No, I don't know my airline, airport, or flight schedule yet, though it looks a lot like Dulles. What boxes are absolutely not to be missed, and how can I get to them. Keep in mind I have arthritis and a half mile is a loong hike for me...so a multitude of drivebys would be better, but we also want to see all the cool stuff in DC...and if and how much admission is charged to get in to what places...

(breathe!)

ok, you can see I'm both excited and broke... so educate me... what can I do, and how do I best do it? and all those details I need to know... and who can I meet while out there? :-)

Well this is really cool. We live very close to Herndon. There are actually several boxes, including many dirve bys, in Northern VA all around Herndon. From Herndon you can take an express bus that transfers to the subway to get to downtown DC. It takes almost about an hour.

Cheap place to stay? Hmm, not sure. Consider the low cost chains across the river in VA. That time of year, though, and on a weekend, you should be able to find some incredible deals. The hotels would be doing much of no business otherwise.

Most of the museums, all of the Smithsonians are free. That is except the Air & Space annex, near Herndon, that charges for parking. The Spy Museum is real popular but costs money. Be sure to look at web sites of the museums and what they have so that you know what you "want" to see that interests you and you don't want to miss. It is easy to wonder aimlessly through stuff you don't really care about and miss stuff you would have really wanted to see. The grand monuments, like Lincoln and Jefferson, are best at night. Hmm, cold though, in Jan.

It sounds like you are renting a car. Like any city, parking can be impossible during the weekday, unless you pay for a garage. On the weekend, in the middle of January it is probably easier. There are a couple of drive bys in DC. I'll have to look at the list and get back to you. Feel free to write to me directly. Night Owl and I would be glad to meet for an exchange.
