No good deed goes unpunished--vent

First I have to say that my husband is really about the nicest person you could ever meet--he's much, much nicer than I am. Well, this is his morning commuting story. I copied it from an e-mail he sent to me:

"You wont believe what happened during my commute today. I was driving up I-85 when the traffic in the right lane came to a stop. It was a little scary because people were flying by on the next lane and also the shoulder to miss hitting the stopped cars. Once I got by, I saw there was a lady whose car was barely moving. For some reason she was not willing or able to get the car onto the shoulder. I pulled into the grass and rolled down my window to offer to help. A few seconds later I saw a spray of liquid and what I thought was steam coming from her car. I thought her radiator was overheating. Then I felt the burn and I realized that she had her hand reached out her window and she was spraying mace at me! It was about all could do to get the car in gear and pull off on the next exit.

"I don’t know what she thought I was going to do to her. If there is a fatality on I-85 north near _____on the news, you’ll know it was this lady who was more worried about macing me than getting smashed by an 18 wheeler.

"Anyway, now I know what being maced feels like. First, thank God that I got is mostly on the left side of my face because at least my right eye wasn’t tearing up and I could still see to drive. Next the left side of my face and the exposed top of my hand burns like a sun burn. My left ear canal is burning too. My mouth had a foul metallic taste in it for a while. That has worn off now. My lungs feel congested. I feel like I can’t fill them up all the way.

"Add this to my list of commuting stories. I will be able to laugh about this later."
___

So, after I commiserated with him about the macing, I had a couple of things to say about his putting his own life in jeopardy in such a way. Argh.

Does anyone know anything that might ease his suffering? 8-)

WOW!!!!!!! That is unbelievable!
My husband is a corrections officer and often gets sprayed all in the name of training......anyway, he said to tell your hubby to flush out his eyes with water only. Don't use any eye drops or anything like that, just keep flushing with water. Also if he has a fan handy (I know, wrong time of year for that, but just incase) he can put his face in front of the fan for a bit. He said the stinging should last for about 45 minutes.
Sorry, I guess he's going to just have to wait it out other than that.
'tis the season huh?????

good luck

Wow.... I can't believe this story. That is just ridiculous. I don't know what state you are in but in NY, her actions would be considered Assault in the Second Degree, a class D felony. There is no "reasonable" reason for her to take the actions that she did and her actions definitely could result in charges if your husband were to report it.

By now, he should be feeling much better, but Amy of LUNA had it right -- my fiancee and I get sprayed with mace on a regular basis for training as well and all of his symptoms were completely normal... my condolences that he had to endure them!!! All you can do is flush, flush, flush with water and a fan helps, but water is definitely the best. You can even hold a cold, wet cloth over the affected areas if they are hard to flush properly ... but water is the only way. Now, if he gets a dose of riot gas (CS gas) then water would be the last thing you want to reach for... just keep that in mind for the next crazy driver!!!! lol

But honestly, that is just terrible. I'm a first responder in the state of NY and I'm sitting here just trying to imagine what I would do if I went to assist a vehicle and was sprayed with mace. my goodness..... whoever sprayed me better pray there's another first responder in the area because they're gonna need it when I get done with 'em! lmao!!

Happy Holidays to you and yours-

Um... I would have gotten her licence plate number and reported her to the cops. But is that just because I'm from Jersey?

You gotta hope another person that saw it got the plate number. After getting sprayed by mace probably the last thing he was able to do was catch a plate number. I think that is awful that someone could do that. And we wonder why no one stops and helps anyone anymore!

I would definatley press charges on her if you could find her again!

Hope your hubby is feeling better.

I have to wonder if she had had a bad experience previously....or how scared she might have been. Did she have a cell phone and help was already on the way? Although, she had two car doors between them she could've yelled over a warning first...geesh....'tis not only the season, 'tis just the way of life now...trust and old fashion concern are not the norm....we are wary of it's ulterior motives.

Glad it wasn't pepper spray...I've heard that stuff is AWFUL for days....

In Georgia, as in most places, there is a minimum speed for the highway: 40 mph. If you can't maintain that, by law, you must get off the highway.

Of course, in metro Atlanta, you would think that the speed limit is the MINIMUM speed.

I'm glad I missed this—I'm on the same stretch of road every day!
