I just started Geocaching and I saw a link on that website for letterboxing. I thought I might give it a try. I think I understand it. I do have one question though. I take a stamp with me and stamp the logbook with it and stamp my book with the stamp in the box,but do I leave the stamp I brought with me and take the stamp in the box and leave it at the next box and so on? Or do I keep the stamp I bring and leave the stamp in the box?

P.S. I hope this was the right board for the question.

Welcome to the very addicting hobby of letterboxing!

You stamp your book with the box stamp and stamp the box book with your stamp. Leave the box stamp in the box, it may pertain to the box in detail. Take with you the stamp you brought! As you go along in the hobby you may carve or buy yourself a stamp that "fits" you...i.e your signature stamp. You will see many stamps along the trail that are beautiful representation of peoples trail identity.

First off...welcome to the addiction.

Next, yes leave the stamp in the box. The image sometimes goes with the area that the box is planted in.

Thank you for taking the time to research it and asking.

The stamp you find in the box ALWAYS stays in the box....unless it is a hitchhiker. (check out the glossary under the Home menu for a definition of a hitchhiker). The stamp you bring with you is your signature stamp - it should represent something about you. But you are correct about the stamping process.

The stamp in the box stays in the box; your stamp is your "signature" and you take it with you to each box you find. Just like your real signature, it doesn't get separated from you. :-)

Most box stamps are based in some way on the location or name of the box. It wouldn't make sense to take it away.
