Question for Postal Letterboxers
Board: Postals

Thread (disabled) Board
If we were to participate in a postal ring, would it be okay to pass the boxes around our local circle when it arrived at our mailbox? We would, of course, present the idea up front when registering. There are about 20 of us.

Or, would there be someone interested in just sending their postal letterbox to a group of twenty letterboxers? I guess it would be similar to sending a letterbox to an event, but it would lack the event.

We do hope to host another event this spring or summer, but this would be fun in the meantime.

What do you think?

Most PLBer's know that some people have multiple boxers in each household (for example, my own home houses the other four members of the Kenmore Quinn Clan, none of whom 'actively' participate in PLBing, but sometimes enjoy the ones that come through), and leave some extra space in the logs accordingly. Generally, one should ask the PLB's creator if it's ok to share- most, in my experience, dont' have a problem as long as you stamp onto as little space as possible, so there's still room for the remaining ring members.

For the record, anyone who recieves one of my PLB's (ring or single) is free to share it with whoever is around while it's in your house- as long as you leave room if room is needed for ring members, and it's still sent out in an appropriate amount of time.

But, as i said, as for extra people stamping into PLBs, ASK the owner BEFORE.

I also usually think of PLB's in terms of HH's when it comes to 'sharing' them- in other words, I have my 'extra' people take the PLB's image, but don't have them stamp into the logbook. That saves space while still sharing. :D
Again- I usually ask.

I always ask before I have someone who isn't on the list (like my next door nephew) stamp in a postal. I've never had any one mind, but I still like to ask. That becomes even more important with a larger group like yours because many times there is only room in the logbooks for the people that the owner expects to be in the ring. But if they knew up front like you say, then they would be able to make the accomodations.
I have several singles that will be going out soon that you would be welcome to have one person sign up on, but all of you stamp. :)

This would probably be something to ask the ring leader BEFORE you sign up. That way, the leader could notify the other members of the ring to make sure that they put enough pages in their logbooks. Also, you should try to fit all of your stamps on as few pages as possible - 2 or 3 at the most depending on the size of the pages and whether or not you are allowed to stamp on both sides of the paper.

<<<I was thinking of starting up a PLB ring for people in WA... to get to know the people around here.>>>

I would love to do this! I think it would be so fun while getting to know who is in this state!

Oooh...may I steal your idea for NH? There are a bunch of newbies here! I think that would definitely be a fun thing to do to help get us all aquainted before our first big gathering/event that we're trying to plan.

Quote have you all (yourself and the 20 people in your community) ever thought of doing a ring that only included your circle? You each could do a carving and send it or even hand-give it to the next person in the "ring"

That's a good idea, but I think I'd wait on it. We are new to letterboxing, and some of these friends are doing well to get their signature stamps carved. ;-) But, they would all love to give their log books (we call them "passports") a boost with visiting postals.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, letterboxing in south Louisiana seems to have come to a screeching halt. We're trying to revive it. The boxes themselves are dwindling. In the Baton Rouge are alone, there are only four left of an original 20 or so.

Once we get going a little better, I'll bounce your idea off of them. Thanks.

I guess I have to agree with my fellow PLB's. I would love to add extra pages my logbook for your fellow neighbors. Knowing ahead of time is key. Personally I would love my log books full when they get back.

I know now where to send my "not full" log books, :o)

I would also be keeping track of how long you had the PLB. Most PLB want a turn-around in a couple of days. I'd also be worried that if I started passing it around the group, it would get inadvertantly lost. Maybe you caould have a Stamping In Party - everyone could come for lunch and stamping in.

What a great idea! It would be fun to see a bunch of states do this, although I'm sorry I can't see the other 49 states. Maybe some will make it as single PLBs.

We meet at least weekly, so the time to stamp in would be at absolute most a week, but as soon as a day. That would depend on the mail. We wouldn't pass it around.

In Massachusetts we are on round 2 of a in-state only postal ring. So far its been pretty good & if you set up a seperate Yahoo group, it gives you all the chance to chat if you want to too.
