Isn't that the noise you make when you're laughing so hard the laughter comes out your nose?

According to the urban dictionary, it's a conspicuously smart person:

Oh, and be careful about googling the term...

It seems there is a use of the word as a part of a phrase that describes an intimate physical act that you would not want to describe around children.

Having seen that other reference, I wouldn't encourage children to say the word a lot.

yeah, but unsophicated people who are afraid of the word "sex" will take any cute word and subvert its meaning...

whereas we all understand that here and now on our boards, it just means Jenni is laughing again...which makes you look up the thread to see what HP and/or wassa said...

There's more than an ounce of truth that THAT statement!

Dearie me, I hadn't intended to encroach upon an "inside joke"-- I'm a newcomer and all, and I thought it was a serious question as to what people mean when they say that word-- as if they had heard it somewhere, or their kids had come home from school saying the word "snurk."

I didn't mean to say that we must all be prudish here, but I am aware that a lot of families use these boards and just wanted to give fair warning about the material to save someone the trouble if need be. If you ever saw a group of rotten thirteen year old neighborhood bullies spend months mercilessly hounding a poor little eight year old who innocently confused the name of a hobbit with the name of a sex toy, then you understand where my suggestion of caution was coming from. I don't have kids, but my friends who do have them appreciate when I give then a heads up about a slang term that could embarass someone unknowingly. It's a matter of personal choice and discretion and many people approach these things in many different ways.

By all means, Jenni, laugh out lout as freely and joyfully and cleverly and snortingly and snurkingly as you can!

From all these reactions, I guess I would do better to hesitate the next time someone appears to be asking for a little help with a simple question.

I don't take offense at all.

I am, however, a mother, as well as a school teacher. If there's ever an opportunity to hear the latest and grreatest, I hear it.

That said, as far as I know, I am the primary snurker in these parts. Perhaps a more pointed, quiet question would have been better received. Sometimes it's all in the approach.

Happy Trails!

Nah... help away! You had information of which I (and others) was ignorant. Better to know than not. And I think the reactions were more a way of saying... "no offense, we meant it as a nasal-induced response" than anything. Besides, now I know that when I post something, and jpmcd says "snurk", she's REALLY saying that I am "a conspicuously smart person". I don't have a problem with that! :)

Of course, you shouldn't have a problem with that! :-P

And, wass is right. Thank you for the info.

Happy Trails.

Who, me?

Nah....actually, I decided that was had the right attitude (but dont' tell him I said so). This just wasn't something worth getting upset over. I meant it innocently when I said my "snurks" and the giving of info was done innocently as well. No blood, no foul.

I just had to throw this into the mix...be careful when you say *shag*.

After Austin Powers it gives new meaning to shag carpet.

Too true, too true... There's a whole series of jokes built around that one in the BBC series, "The Thin Blue Line" and "Black Adder" just to name two that I'm very familiar with.

I apologize, I should have used a quote in my post.

But, then again, it is always interesting to know the terms of words. When my daughter was a baby, I used to sing this song line to her. A friend of my older daughter told me what it meant. I was horrified, and sure that the baby was going to be traumatized for life. I can't even listen to that song anymore.

This side of the big pond SNORK seems to be the prefered word. I see on some of the BBC's boards regularly so it must be OK.
