Am I Nuts?

Have you ever had one of those days when you really wanted to know if everyone else is crazy, or is it just me?

I want to ask everybody a couple of questions, but it requires a picture. So, to see the questions, please click on this link:

http://www.nettally.com/palmk/RoadSign.gif

I'd prefer it if people would go ahead and post their answers without waiting to see what others answered.

Now, I'll repeat the text portion of the questions here so that people can copy and paste at will:

Q1: Which road is Park Avenue?

A) the road heading towards A
B) the road heading towards B

Q2: If you were given directions that said "Turn right on Park Avenue", what would you do?

A) drive straight on towards A
B) turn towards B

Tell me which way is north and I can answer.

As a general rule, Avenues run East and West, Boulevards run North and South. So, if you say that the direction of A is northward or southward then I would say that the road heading toward B is Park Avenue and turning right toward B would be correct.

However, If you said that B is north or south, then the road toward A should be Park Avenue. But, obviously, you cannot turn right onto the road you are already traveling on.

What do I win if I get it right? ;-)

Aaaargh. I pulled the road name outta my ***. Now apparently it was a bad choice, confusing the issue. Or maybe it was a good choice, revealing yet another layer of insanity!

Well since it looks as though I'm on A and it says to turn right on Park Ave. My only option would be to turn Right at the intersection. Now if you were on Road B and to turn Right on Park Ave., I would turn right, seeing that is your only option. I have seen many roads such as this, coming down road B, to turn right at such and such road. But the road to the left was named something else. Very confusing if your backtracking. Good thing I have my GPS with me, I would just follow the breadcrumbs back. But since I would have my trusty GPS with me anyway, I would just check the map program and it would tell me which is Park Ave, and which way I need to turn to achieve my destination.

The answer for me, which I suspect is your point, is that the drawing is very unclear. From one perspective, I'd say that the answer is "the road heading towards B," since in the drawing, the "Park Avenue" sign seems to line up with that road. If the drawing, however, is from the perspective not of a map but of what a driver sees while in a car, I'd say that the answer is "the road heading towards A," because they often put road signs periodically along the road on which you are traveling so that you know what the name of your street is. Personally, if given this choice, I'd figure that I needed to do more research for Q1, though if given the Q2 option along with Q1, I'd figure that selection B was the answer.

This is one reason that I find standardized tests so irritating--not from a sour grapes perspective, since I usually do pretty well on them, but from a "who is the idiot who framed the question like this?" perspective. As I've said to friends and family, unless a genius was the one writing the test, how can you know that the answers really define your intelligence? The answer, of course, is that you can't.

Don't get me wrong--obviously, standardized tests CAN tell you if a person has learned a particular subject--that's one reason that they work for schools. But telling you what a person's POTENTIAL for learning is? Nuh-uh.

Just my opinion of course--but a darned good opinion! :D

Since most road signs are placed for a driver to know when they are approaching a new road, I would say that road B is Park Avenue, because the name of the road is facing road A. When I look at the picture, I assume we are going up road A, approaching road B on the right. Therefore road B is Park Avenue, and I don't know what road A is called, just that I used this road to get to road B.

Quote Q1: Which road is Park Avenue?
Q2: If you were given directions that said "Turn right on Park Avenue", what would you do?

B) the road heading towards B
B) turn towards B

I say the road heading toward A
but,

I would say going on B, turn right on A for the second one.
Drive straight toward A doesn't make sense to me.

Sorry, hit enter too fast. The reason I say Park Ave would be B and thus turn right towards B is that the name of the street you are coming to would be on the sign with the name facing toward the driver. If you were driving toward the sign coming from B, the sign would tell you the name of A. Since you are on A the name has to be the name of the road heading towards B. OK you have my two cents!!!!!

The answer to both questions is B. We have signs here in the Northeast like this. I've learned that the portion that faces you as you drive is the name of the side street you are passing. On the side that is facing the side street, the street you are currently on would be displayed. This way, you know what street you're coming up on. Hopefully, you know what street you're already on.

Gee, it's just the opposite here. Avenues go north-south, and Boulevards east-west.

But as for the question, I'm not sure. If the signpost were on the other side of the road, it'd look more like it was saying B was Park Avenue, but with it where it is, it's hard to say.

Now, if I were traveling along A, and I knew when I got on it what the name of it was, then it'd be easier.

That road sign was designed by a New Englander for sure. Imagine in your head if it were one of the normal green signs that you're used to that's several feet higher- the cross street would be facing you- parallel to the street it's naming & the street you're on would have a sign parallel to it- this is the same thing, only lower & likely made of concrete. We have them everywhere- Park Ave. is the cross street- the name of the street you're one would be visible when you passed the sign so that whomever was on Park St would see the name of the street they were approaching (wouldn't you already know the name of the street you're on?).

Turn Right onto B. :) Plus, the directions said to turn right, not go straight, didn't they? Why not.

if the words Park Ave is facing road A, and I had to look sideways to see it, I'd say road A was Park.

If I could read Park Ave as I was driving toward the sign while on road A, I would assume road B was Park, and would turn R onto road B.

That's usually how road signs work, so I would take that as my cue.

Well its not just you, I thought I was top of the list :o)

More importantly, which way is it to the letterbox??, I would say B then B only because coming down B you wouldn't know that Park was the other road because you were coming down the road and could not see the sign. I'm not quite sure if I explained that correctly or not :o{

Do what I do, just drive and look for spots to hide new letterboxes.....or until your sigificant other tells you to pull over and ask for directions.

I guess it all depends on where you are at the time. There is a Park Ave in Dayton Ohio off Far Hills Ave, but if you keep going about 1/8 of a mile you will run into Park Rd. They both turn right off of Far Hills Ave.

The road heading towards B is Park Avenue and I would turn right.

Then...if I didn't find the letterbox, I would stop and ask the first friendly face for directions to Park Avenue. Women don't usually have the same inhibitions about that that men do. ;)

All of what everyone's said makes perfect sense, but if you want to be certain, you could always make the clues say, "When you get to the vertical sign that says, 'Park Avenue,' turn right."

This is what I was thinking, too. I do not want to step on toes or be a bug, but my question is if you are not planting an intentional mystery box, why not make the clues as readable/followable by people as possible?

please do not flame me, I'm new at this!

But I am not afraid to stop and ask for directions if that choice doesn't turn out well.

That's the same reasoning that I used. The sign is put there for you to read about the road you are approaching.

Usually, in my part of the country, the road name facing you as you travel is the one that relates to the cross street and the one that you can look at as you go past an intersection is the name of the street on which you are traveling. So, since I can read the sign as I look ahead, I would say that the road heading towards B is Park Avenue and I would turn right and travel towards the B. :) So, I'm saying B on both counts.
