I think the number of new postal rings is great! There are so many great ideas floating around, I just want to join them all. So many of them sound so fun! It is through PLBing that I have seen the work of people across the country that I never would have been able to see in the wild. I also have made some great, firm friends.

However, with the number of rings multiplying faster than bunnies, I want to put a couple of cautions out there.

1. Rings go on longer than you think. Boxes get held up in one spot, they get bunched, people get distracted. I am in one now that started in June. It's almost finished, but not quite. I would have thought it would have finished two months ago, and so signed up for several more (the minis don't count, right MWL?).

2. Rings get expensive. If you have a 15 person ring, that's almost $40 on postage for that one ring. Add in your supplies. . .and then multiply that times the number of rings. . .you might be a little shocked!

3. It gets overwhelming. I strongly advise being in no more than 5 rings at any given time. Fewer (more like 2-3) is probably a better idea, but well, I understand the pull. Just remember #1--rings go on longer than you think--and be a better planner than I am.

4. Just because there's a great idea out there, you don't have to do it. Everything can be done a second time. Or a third time.

5. If you do start feeling overwhelmed, it is okay to drop out of a ring midway through. When this has happened, I really respect the person who does it. One time, a ring member collected stamp images for the drop-out so that she could still get the images. I thought this was a good solution. Bowing out of a ring is a better idea than disappearing, which happens too.

6. If you do find yourself as a black hole, accept help. Someone may offer to send you a postage-paid box. Take them up on the offer!

Rings running differently like the state birds will not be as costly as a traditional ring with just mailing one package out and back to you and your carving does not leave your side! And there is still openings for this ring...

I should take my own advice as well. But mine are a more "oops, that one didn't finish when I thought it would" variety. And like I said, minirings don't count. . .or any other kind of trouble MoWizLiz gets me into!
