What to do, what to do.....

So here's the story. I've been making some changes to the database for logical and practical reasons--mostly to do with how preferences are stored. I think I've got it all working properly on my test machine, though admittedly I wish I had some more time to test before making the code live.

Now here's the problem with uploading the changes--it's going to break stuff and, after all the changes are uploaded, will require everyone to log in again to Atlas Quest to reset some session variables.

I really need to set something up that will give people a warning whenever I'm about to take AQ down. It would also be nice if I had two methods of making the site inaccessible while putting up changes. The first would be to allow people to continue using the site EXCEPT for any pages that require you log in. (Sometimes, the changes only affect member-specific sessions, but the rest of the site will still work fine. That's the case with this particular change.) Other times, the changes may break anything on the site, and it would be nice to have AQ put up a simple little page saying an update was in progress and to come back later.

It's really quite rude of me to be breaking stuff while people are using it. =)

Anyhow.... Being in the middle of the day, I'm hesitate to upload substantial changes that will break stuff temporarily, and if something goes wrong may take longer to get back up than anticipated. So for now, I've decided not to mess with the preferences. Later tonight when there aren't many people online, I'll upload fixes and you can change your preferences tomorrow.

For the rest of today, though, I'm going to work on a system that allows AQ to display a warning about the system going down soon, then allows AQ to kick logged in members off (if necessary) or make the entire site unaccessible (if necessary) and perhaps, if I get it done today, I'll test it out tonight. =)

Ho hum, ho hum..... it's off to work I go....

Oh a sign for maintenance - you need to speak to those people who leave a laminated card behind saying 'Box Removed, Back Soon' lol.

Actually, I think a sign will be great, not because I feel I need warning, but because if there is something visible telling me that AQ is down for maintenence then I won't panic that my own computer/internet connection etc is broken. It is a while since I had trouble logging onto AQ, but I do remember being in a panic that my computer had a bug/was broken.

Thank you for all your explanations GT, I love hearing about AQ's inner workings.
