Quote no one should be telling you it's the ONLY product you should use and imply that somehow you are clueless if you don't find it works

Oh yeh! Says who!

The only proper carving medium is the American cheese squares ( please no cheese racing ) all others are bogus. The great little squares need backing with pure unadulterated white bread and mayo. Throw away your Exacto, Speedball, and Staedtler tools and use a straight razor, unless you can find some other throw back to past days. Remember only real letterboxers use the plastic wrapped stuff. If you screw up the carving...have it for lunch.

Quote I switched to only using an x-acto blade on firmer material and have been very happy with that method.

The straight X-Acto is easier to sharpen, too. I prefer to use a cheap knockoff rather than a genuine X-Acto, because the knockoff blades are smaller and thinner.

I can't believe I have been soooo led astray!

A couple of questions before I run to the deli: Can Provolone work? And do I have to back it with white? Can I use wheat or is the consistancy all wrong? What about a regular butter knife for carving? Does it have to be a razor? What brand of razor? Is there a website you can refer me to??

Only Emmenthal, if you please! Slice the holes out of the way with the proper cheese cutting knife, then you will have the perfect carving medium.

Wow. Emmenthal...and I just thought it was Swiss.

I'm afraid I can't work with Swiss. Too tough on the blades. Do you get B grade? White or orange? I would think a nice Orange Chedder would work pretty good, but since I"m new, what do I know?

oh, boy... y'all have given me the giggles on this one, but...

...is it truly scary that what I'm really thinking is... What's wassamatta u going to do with this when he does his next "Scooping the Letterbox" report?

On another note (er, thread)... You might be a letterboxer if you can't even walk down the Cheese aisle without thinking of ways to carve...

Well, it might depend on the age of the cheddar block, as they tend to become more crumbly as they age. You might want to watch the firmness factor with an aged cheddar, too - be sure to use sharp tools... ;-)

Quote The Staedler tools...They can be sharpened though. Right?

I have had the same set for the past two and a half years.
I have never sharpened them.

You've seen the ploy!! I only want to be on "Boxers in Briefs!" I was just trying to get noticed!!

However, I DID just get back from the grocery store and was wondering if Brie is the equivelant to "the pink stuff".....

i found myself making all kind of mistakes with the carving tool so i started using the exacto blade to carve all the edges out and then take my pick of the others to "hollow" out the dead stuff. when carving the edges you angle the blade into the spaces the you are removing and be ware of the depth of the blade. i also found it really hard to use the inverted tips.....i need to see the point when i'm working. maybe this all comes from my first experiences of carving on linoleum a zillion years ago to make plates for card making.

You know, I keep worrying that mine are getting dull, but when I compare them to a newer tip, like I mentioned before, it seems the same....I'm amazed that you've had yours that long! Well, that settles it for me....I'll probably be sticking with Staedtler....and someday I'll even learn to spell it....

All this having been said, I was working on the PZ last night and it was a "little" easier than the first couple times....however, it's just not worth all the hassle I think when I find Mastercarve so much easier in every way.
