I just found some great fake books at AC Moore for anyone who has been wondering about a letterbox at a favorite library. They are the size of average hard cover books, and open when you pull out a drawer. The one I bought cost under $4.00 and on top of that I had a coupon. I bought one and I am looking forward to creating a faux leather cover. Someboxer wrote earlier that by cooperating with the librarian, they were able to get a real number and entry in the card catalogue. I might try that. I have green grass in my yard, but know that winter is on the way and time for some of those longer more detailed projects.

Eaglewatcher--who will also go to ACM moonlight madness next Sunday evening--oops! can't find the ad, but I'm sure I read that somewhere. I'll be ready for an exchange if you happen to be there also. I will wear a fake fur vest, grey short hair, glasses.

Yah! That's good to know....I tend to just want to go out and BUY rather than actually put the work into making a false book. I know, it's rather uncreative of me...I did buy two books at a used book store so that I can experiment with the whole making a box out of a book thing...but thanks for the heads up on this! I did find, at Michaels, a cardboard book shaped box that you can decorate. It's very plain, but interesting...I've decided to use that for a local book store...I'd like to go real books for the library's though.

Let me know how the whole real number and entry in the card catalogue thing goes....I'm not getting the idea that my local librarians would go for that.....would be interested in knowing how you approach it...and it would be nice for librarians that I approach to see a "precident" as it were, for here in ME.

I just found out that Michaels will take an AC Moore coupon. Wish I'd known that the other day when the 60 percenter came out! Don't know if it works the other way, but next time I have a Michaels coupon I'm going to try it.

Another good way to approach a public librarian is to offer to do a free workshop for the library.

Also, just take some time to get to know the place and people a bit. Spend some time there. Librarians like people. And we have this horrible thing about always wanting to say 'yes' to people. ;)

LG.

My favorite librarian is a local history buff like me. We are both intrigued with the personal history that travels down through families and local institutions. She is treasurer for the local historical society and when my homemade greeting cards etc sell at the museum store, she signs the checks that keep me going back to craft stores for more materials. This is my way of staying at an expensive hobby and donating to a non-profit at the same time.

not to worry... do you have a 'well known' book store nearby?? Some have *faux* books for gift cards for sale. Getting the Librarian in on it will help... ;)

While Brando DOES look delicious in that book I would say 24.99 is WAY too much to pay!

There was a wonderful thread with a link to "DIY" recently...I apologize to the person who posted this as I donn't have time to go back and look for info...but here is the bookmark I kept!

I've got some big tomes I bought the other day used, for this purpose...waiting for an oppurtunity to start cutting!

I think of it as recycling--not distruction. At least one of our local school systems put a policy in place some time ago about receiving donations. People hoped that they could donate their old encyclopedia sets instead of having to pay for their disposal at the recycle center. Same with old computers. It was costing a fortune for schools to get rid of the junk teachers were too soft hearted (or packratish) to refuse. Out of date history or encyclopedias would have to be altered, but would make good fakes. Better that fate than the landfill or incinerator.

This is a great link. Thanks for the easy access to these directions. Looks like a potential good hiding idea for a letterbox or two!
