I told my dad about letterboxing and he thinks it's pretty cool and is going to start doing it. I want to send him a "getting started" kit for Christmas, and here's what I have for the contents so far. Any other suggestions that I should add to the list?

a few other cleaned containers and logbooks that will fit inside them
A logbook for himself (I already sent him a personal stamp)

Erasers to carve (he already has Xacto)

a few general purpose stamps that he can place inside

maybe I'll put it all in a backpack

that is SOOO cool of you to do that for your dad! very very nice indeed. you might send him some samples of some kind, maybe some images of some stamps out of your logbook, some you've found and some you've planted. Heck, you could make up two or three boxes completely, ready to be planted, and he can find places to plant them. But the point would be for him to see one complete. Of course, he'd see that anyway when he goes out hunting them, but.... Maybe a good basic black ink pad too? In case he wants to stamp in a solid color instead of coloring it sometimes. Good luck to your dad, and I hope he gets good and hooked on this like the rest of us. :)

For your first few lines, i.e. those with "info" what about a copy of Randy Hall's book? http://www.atlasquest.com/marketplace/amazon/ I've been boxing for over a year now and still find things to look up in there. Maybe he can figure out the box clues I just KNOW must be in there! :-)

If it were me receiving these GREAT gifts, I'd prefer to pick out my own backpack to carry everything in - it took me awhile to get it just how I like it, so that part, to me anyway, is sorta personal and would be hard for someone else to know what would work for me....that's my .02 (and maybe I'm just overly picky in this area).

That's great that someone in your family is interested. I took a whole bunch of stuff up to my family today to explain to them what letterboxing is, and they are still baffled! I don't know what else to do - I showed them stamps that I was in the process of making, I showed them my logbook, I showed them a postal, I showed them some clues - they JUST DON'T GET IT!

How about a few ink pads in basic colors - black, blue, red, etc.

for me the easy way to introduce a friend to this was to take them out on a hunt. after they helped find the box they were more interested in the details of the hobby.

+3.5 reading glasses for carving.

Don't forget a flashlight...because once you get hooked...it's hard to stop when the sun goes down!!! *GRIN* Finally put one in my own backpack so I don't have to "find" my way in the woods in the dark again!

...or a head lamp for hands free lighting of the stamping in process!

You could carve a stamp for him to plant (Ode to Dad). It would be a terrific way to help get him introduced into the process of planting.
