NC Treasure Hikers!

Announcing a fun new aspect to letterboxing in North Carolina!!!

Myself and several cohorts have been tossing around ideas about this for a month or so and here’s what we have come up with, solely for fun and enjoyment!

We’d like to introduce the NC Treasure Hiker’s challenge – and it works like this – accumulate 25 “hiking” points and you will be awarded a really cool pathtag, designed by our own amazing graphic designer, Dixie! (design coming soon, soon as Dixie gets over The Flu)

How do you accumulate the points, you ask? It’s very simple:

Hike while letterboxing.

See – it’s that simple.

But to make it easier – here are some guidelines.
-You get a point for every mile hiked while letterboxing (finding or planting) – but each hike must be a minimum of one (1) mile in length.
-If you plant a letterbox (or boxes) on a hike, you get one extra point (sorry, one per hike, not one per box planted).
-The start date is March 1, 2009 – all hiking must be done after that date.
-Keep track of your hikes and boxes found. When you get your 25 points, email me, Dixie or Knit Wit with your list, and you will receive your tag!! List should include date, mileage, boxes found.
-All hikes must be done IN the great state of North Carolina (anywhere in NC, mountains to coast and in between) – but ANY letterboxer is eligible – you don’t have to be a resident of NC to participate.
-It’s on the honor system, we trust you!!

Why are we doing this? Just for fun! And to encourage hiking, planting and being in the great outdoors letterboxing in the great state of North Carolina.

Also look for:

SC Treasure Hikers, brought to you by dtandfambly and friends - check the SC board for more details!

A Mountain Challenge by Dixie - you know how Dixie is - she's doing her usual amazing job of rounding up carvers (and hikers) to plant some really neat boxes in her beloved Mountains of WNC - this one will be a bit different than the Treasure Hikers - but just as fun - stay tuned for details!

Separate pathtags will be awarded for each challenge - start your collection today!

Any questions – AQ mail me and wait patiently for a reply.

You got the right idea Dina B!!!! Baby Fox isn't up for long mileage (still got to send her to Wolf Boot Camp ;-)), so I won't be an early finalist. But every mile adds up! Wondering if we should rewrite the rules to including a "whiner bonus" (i.e. if you have to take a whining child along, you get an extra point - lol!!! I'd be done in a month!!).

Dixie claims she won't be getting it, cause she's not a hiker - but I told her that if I have to plant 25 boxes on 25 one mile hikes and personally drag her to each and everyone - she's gonna do it!!! So now that I've said it on the boards, we gotta make it happen!!!

Thanks for all the positive response, fellow NCer's! I think this will be a lot of fun! Look for our pathtag design soon!

To make it a bit easier, I put the whole email here. So just remember to do a search for NC Treasure Hikers, under Other boxes, and presto - there's the info!

Happy Hiking and Happy Boxing!!

i have a question. if the getting the box on a trail only requires a 0.3 mile hike, but the whole trail is a 2.3 mile loop, and you hike the whole trail, can you count the mileage for the whole trail?

You know, this whole NC Treasure Hikers thing is about fun and hiking and letterboxing. ANd that's why it's on the honor system - we aren't going to be checking logbooks, or the soles of your hiking boots to see if they are appropriately worn and muddy ;-))

I'm gonna say - it's your call - if you feel like the entire hike is in the spirit of the game, then put it down. Or make a box and plant it at the halfway mark in the loop while you are out there - and someone will hike out and find it the next weekend for the mileage points!
