In observation of Mardi Gras, or what they call Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, we have the next installment of "Curious Games the British Play" : Pancake Racing:

The most famous pancake race, at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line tossing the pancakes as they go. As the pancakes are thin, skill is required to toss them successfully while running. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times.

Shrove Tuesday was once known a 'half-holiday' in England. It started at 11:00 a.m. with the signalling of a church bell. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney was so busy making pancakes, that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake.

So go have some pancakes (with Golden Syrup, of course!)

well since you started it with the talk of pancake so I'm going to risk getting tongue lashed and say.........

GOOD MORNING Georgia!!!

I love getting people riled up in the morning, it shows they are still alive and don't need my CPR training...

HI Oread!!!!! *Waving as confetti flies out of my hands*

'Salright...I've had my coffee (well, at least one cup).

No tongue lashings here....as long as you bring pancakes! :-)

and king cakes

Yummm... We had counsel in from out of town (New Orleans) last week - and he had a fresh king cake Fedex'd to us. We had one last year and I got the baby. Little did I know that whoever finds the baby is supposed to bring the king cake the following year. This year, our outside counsel got it...so looks like we'll get another fresh one from the Big Easy again next year!

I first tasted Golden Syrup when I was 9 years old (my family lived in Nigeria at the time). It was so sweet and rich that it made my eyes roll in my head!! and I loved it! Haven't thought about it in years. ...and it's probably a good thing since things like that tend to go straight to my hips!

Mmmmmmm! Golden sweetness!!

My grandmother loved to bake fresh home grown/picked/cooked Apple pies. She would make home made vanilla bean Ice cream. She would cut a slice of hot pie ...put a big scoop of the ice cream on top and pour a bit of that golden stuff on top hand it to us and say "eat fast or it will run off the plate son!" mmmmmmmmmm! I have not thought of that in years..funny...I can almost taste it now!

Any one for some pie? ; 0)

If there were a pancake eating contest. I would totally lose. I can barely eat two Ihop sized pancakes. But I'll make sure to take pictures while the rest of you stuff your face. I'll hide the pics in boxes as first finder prizes.

Ooooo....I love Pancake Day! We're actually having Pancake Week in Kindergarten this week. I have the kids run an obstacle course with pretend frying pans and bean bag pancakes. Today we listened to John Lithgow read Marsupial Sue's Runaway Pancake and Friday they get to follow a recipe and make pancakes for lunch. I'm throwing in Green Eggs and Ham in honor of Dr. Seuss on March 2. I know this has nothing to do with letterboxing, but I miss you guys and wanted to say hello. I did get a glimpse of Eidolon this weekend at the mall, but couldn't catch up to him. He and Chimega walk just as fast at the mall as they do on the trail!

BTW, I think you're all crazy for night boxing Friday night 'cause it was FREEZING!!! Truth be known, if I could've ditched the kids, I would've been there in a heartbeat! =) Glad you all had a good time and no one lost any important parts to FROST BITE.
