My trail name also happens to be a nickname given to me, and used, by friends. Before I knew what letterboxing was, I played around on the CA DMV website trying to find out what I could get for my vanity plate. California allows 7 spaces so I first tried "Buffalo."

taken, obviously. So i tried a few derivations of that, none of which were available. My friend was looking over my shoulder and said "well this is obvious! just do Bufalo T" Brillian, I thought. So I typed it in, WITH the space and when the little graphical preview came back it showed

BUFALOT! (pronounced buff-a-lot). I thought about it and didn't really want to be associated with the beefcakes that are pumping iron on muscle beach.

I tried getting my trail name for my LP . . . but it was denied by Ca DMV and my money was quickly returned.

It fits entirely on a plate with room to spare, though it wouldn't have the kewl capital in the middle . . .
