definition of regions of the united states

everything east and south of the top of the texas panhandle is "the south" except for florida.

florida is where the little old men in hats go for the winter. it is part of "the midwest", except for miami and the beach scene, which is part of california.

oklahoma and texas is "the west", which is where the cowboys roamed.

new mexico, arizona, and the south half of california, except for the coastal area is "the southwest", which is where mexican cuisine and decor reign supreme no matter how white your skin is, and where people look at you strangely if you don't, you really don't, happen to like scalding your taste buds with said mexican "cuisine"

the northern half of california, except for the coastal areas, the eastern half of washington and oregon, along with utah, idaho, and many parts of wyoming and montana are "the intermountain west". this was land settled by pioneers (not all of them mormon).

the coastal areas of california (plus miami, remember?) are "california" which is an area inhabited mostly by vegetarian "green" people and surfers...and a 24-7-365 beach party.

the western half of washington and oregon is "the pacific northwest" and unless you work in computers or aviation, you are probably an artsy ex-hippie.

everything north and east of pennsylvania, except maine, is "new england". they talk funny there.

nobody claims maine except "mainers", who eat nothing but lobster (if they're coastal) and cranberries (if they're inland). as far as I can tell, maine has two seasons..."cold" and "wet".

everything south of pennsylvania and east of the appalachian mountains is "the atlantic seaboard". it is one big city, where new york overflowed and ran down the coast. where the city stops, somewhere in north carolina, is where "the south" begins.

the middle part of the country not already in one of these regions is "the midwest". plus part of florida.

I would tend to add the western half of colorado (the bumpy half) into the intermountain west, and the eastern half (the flat half) into the midwest...same really for wyoming and montana... use the mountains for the dividing line.

as far as I can tell, maine has two seasons..."cold" and "wet".

I know this thread is way old, but I am just catching up on BnB, and I have to do my part and step in to let you know that Maine has four real seasons just like every one else. Depending on what Mainah you ask, the seasons usually go something like this:

Winter, Mud Season, Black Fly Season, Hunting Season

Sunny

Better than here.

We only have 3. Last Winter, This Winter, Next Winter.

Maine is good in all seasons, but the coast is strange in winter....
