I picked a different brand of "carb & choke cleaner" at Wal-Mart, they didn't carry the other line. This one is by Gum-Out and it doesn't work. The ingredients are acetone, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, petroleum distillates, and propane. Note that absense of methanol, which was found in the carb cleaner that DOES work.

So, I googled "methanol" and "inkjet" and discovered that methanol is considered to be the best solvent for inkjets. Other solvents used include acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, but that may be to thin inks rather than dissolve dried ink. Methanol is difficult to work with because it evaporates instantly.

There were also several webpages that discussed technology for making transfer sheets for inkjet printers. They use paper pretreated with silicone (like teflon) and then methane (to dissolve the ink).

That's the one I got and tried last night. I did get a ghostly image to transfer, (which I was able to carve since I drew the design originally and knew where to cut) but it was certainly not the crisp image Dixie and Holly were talking about. Should have waited another day! So it's off to the auto parts store tonight to see if I can find the right one.

Thanks for the update.

Rats. I have a can of carb cleaner here from Wal-Mart, "Super Tech", and it advertises right on the front of the can that it contains no methanol.

I just got a can of intake and manifold cleaner from Advance Autoparts... they don't have the brand that Dixie showed us, but I'm going to try it and I'll let you know.

it WORKs! It works It works! Thank you Holly for re-discovering ink jet transfer and thank you Dixie for reposting what you did.

Now I have to warn you about a the first try and it's failure. You can NOT do this on pre-inked material. If you recall, I covered the right side with yellow ink when I received the slab... this side melted when I put the napalm on it. I was able to rub off the melted part... but it's not going to be a good stamping surface back there... so I tried on the back.

This is the CRC Throttle body and Air intake Cleaner. I just put enough on to wet the paper and rubbed with a metal hook that I had until the paper dried and lifted the paper off and the image is amazing!

I'm not sure about xylene, but acetone is nail polish remover. You will want to get 100% pure acetone rather than the other nail polish removers with dyes, fragrances and other ingredients that make it less effective for transfers. I found it right next to all the other nail polish removers at my grocery store.

I don't know about xylene but you can get acetone in the paint department of Home Depot or Lowes.

First, let me say that I just picked a random image out of the thread to which I might reply, so whatever comes next isn't aimed at any one person in particular.

Okay...

ARE YOU ALL NUTS!?!?

The stuff you're using... acetone, methanol, ammonia, xylene, carburetor cleaner... it's INSANE!!! that you are using this stuff, never mind using it on stamps. Doesn't this stuff (especially the ammonia!) makes your stamps just reek!?

People... seriously. If you have an inkjet printer, trace over the print with a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. If you have a laser printer, you can do the same thing if your toner adheres well and won't be scratched off by the graphite.

Place the paper image-side-down on the medium, and place atop that, along the longest edge, a ruler.
Tape that edge down.
Then use a burnisher (plastic ones available at most arts & crafts stores for pennies) to rub, in long side-to-side passes along the edge of the ruler, the image onto the medium, slowly sliding the ruler away from the tape as you rub.

Virtually no smudging. And certainly no toxic chemicals!

Here's the problem with that. When I tried that I ended up with a pretty wobbly line. Then when I carved it....it was just a bit wobblier. When I was finished I might as well have used a regular pencil (and not a sharp one). So now I'm right back to just tracing the image and not getting the detail I wanted from doing a 'chemical transfer'

Just a minor clarification before anybody gets out the tracing paper... when I said tracing, I really meant to just "color" the print with the pencil.

Now... it sounds like you need to steady those hands. Have a couple homebrews before you begin. :-)

Also, tracing the inkjet print while seated at a picnic table and the hard surface underneath the paper is that well-weathered and very uneven picnic table surface... not recommended.

No it didn't smear after only a few seconds. It's still on there in fact - even after stamping and cleaning the moi stamp all day. I'm thrilled with the results that I've gotten on the gray stuff too.

most nail polish removers are not acetone anymore... some contain it but many boast "acetone free"
you can get a bottle of pure acetone... usually in the paint department of wal-mart or home improvement store
however...
acetone is NOT the best method that works with the mosr inks etc

read this entire thread...
you may learn alot :)

first...
it evaporates very quickly and no...it does not make my stamps reek.

just like I have always said on this topic... strong chemicals are involved with this and use with discretion or not at all...
and never allow children to....
and way back when I was first reluctant to tell my secret "napalm" image transfer but then finally gave in...
I told everyone the reason I had been reluctant was how people freak out over the use of some of this stuff.
also... no one said a word then
LOL
maybe because it didn't get as much attention.

I see moms tell their kids to "close your eyes and hold your breath" as the cover them in a thick spray of bug repellent and DEET but frown on a 10 second use of acetone or methane...

anybody go to the drag races? monster truck shows?
use fuel powered RC cars? cook with teflon coated cookware?
one good sniff of a dragster's exhaust probably has more methane than you'd get from this in upteen dozen uses

when I was growing up we used gasoline to clean car parts (among other things)
not to mention some of the other things we did and used...
so this stuff is not nothing that scares me...
and I am always careful to educate my children about fumes, inhalation etc.
EVERYONE should do that even if you ain't using the stuff. Make your kids aware of all the dangers out there.

so...
to each his own... please everyone use discretion and make educated choices.
I don't use insect repellent if I don't have to...
I do however use this stuff to image transfer ;)

Funny!
I use it all the time... and I used to use it though as I did a minute ago in another post

back in the good ole days ;)
I used to camp at the OLD bristol dragway...
you literally woke up on the hard ground after a crazy night...
by the sounds of Hemi engine roaring and the smell of Methane!

I love the smell of Methane in the morning ;)
REALLY... I do!

Quote ...Napalm choices vs. acetone...

I think perhaps we should review for clarity. Lemme see if I've got this right:

Acetone works great on older laserjets or xerox copiers, doesn't work at all on inkjets. Does it work on newer laserjets? I know ironing doesn't work on some of the newer laserjets, but I dunno about acetone.

Napalm works on inkjets. Does it also work on laserjets? New, old or both? And is Napalm a brand name, or just a slang term we've applied to carburetor cleaner? Whatever, apparently one must find carburetor cleaner with methanol in it, otherwise it won't work. Has anyone tried pure methanol? Can you readily purchase pure methanol?

And how are you guys applying these solvents, anyway? Lay the paper face down on the rubber and apply the solvent to the back of the paper? With a cotton swab or something?
