Good afternoon.

Just wanted to throw out an introduction. My name is Mike. My trail name is Desert Warrior. The kids picked that name for me, stating that my ham radio callsign (KD9KC) was too unimaginative. I am a retired soldier, 20+ years active service, 11 of that in desert warfare, 4 of that involved in special ops/counter narcotics. I have served in combat and would do so again today if they would take me back. They will not. So now I spend my days working as an electronics specialist in a power plant. You will likely not find anyone more patriotic than I.

I have just joined AtlasQuest over the past few days in order to list my 5 letterboxes. I believe I and my family are the only active letterboxers in El Paso Texas. I have been letterboxing about 2 years, and Geocaching about 5 years.

My #1 hobby is competitive shooting. I am an Expert - nearing Master Class in NRA service rifle. I am a C-Class in USPSA combat pistol. In addition to ham radio, I also train dogs, hike, mountain bike, and I own a classic jeep. I am a hike reporter for localhikes.com, with over 40 hikes listed. I also believe I am responsible for my own safety, so I hike suitably equipped.

I am married. Wife's name is Monika - Moni for short (Dane Lady and N5NHC), whom I stole from Germany 28 years ago. She is a professional dog trainer, and raises/trains/breeds Great Danes. The dogs all work, and many do well on the show circuit. She is also a Geocacher, letterboxer, hikes with me, camps with me, I guess after 28 years we do just about everything together. She also hikes suitably equipped. As if the dogs were not deterrent enough.

We have two children.

James is the oldest. He is a Cavalry Scout, Paramedic (I could never handle the medical stuff) and Sniper in the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment. His current assignment is Ft. Carson, soon to transfer to Ft. Hood. He has two combat tours completed, and was decorated for over 200 combat missions as a sniper this last tour. James is Army Scout, and KC0WKY. James is away more than home, so we don't hike like we used to do. I miss that! He has been Geocaching for a few years. I just presented him with a complete letterboxing kit when he returned from Iraq in March.

Heidi is the younger, who just moved out and got married. Life is just getting interesting for her. She couldn't keep her room clean, but now she has a whole apartment and a husband to clean up after. I am watching this develope with amusment! <grin>. She is Desert Kid, and KE5BHT. She has been Geocaching for almost 5 years with me. I just gave her a Letterboxing kit. It was supposed to be a birthday present in July. But her and the new son-in-law went for a hike to a letterbox area.... so she got it early.

We have 4 Great Danes in the house. You can read about them here if you like.

Guess that is enough info. I am trying to interest others in Letterboxing in the El Paso area. Any suggestions on getting more people involved would be most welcome.

Y-all have a great day.

Mike. El Paso, TX.

Welcome to AtlasQuest, Mike!

He has been an invaluable resource to all of us on the Texas yahoo group. He keeps wanting to know when we're going to come find his El Paso boxes, but California is actually closer to El Paso than the other end of Texas where I live.
