Quote Ok, everyone save their inserts and we'll all send them to Ryan! TG

Okay this reminded me of my insert story. Using the typical disclaimers it wasn't me, I didn't do this, but it sure seemed like an interesting 'get even' method one of my former clients used.

You know the insert with the little areas you check off for receiving items or information regarding a vacation spot or some other things that will be sent to the person that fills in the blanks. Well this person had some difficulty with some corporate type. This person got really screwed over by this corporate type and filled in every insert they could find. Every visit to a Doctors office, Dentist office, and any other waiting room with magazines...rip, rip, rip, those fillin inserts were removed from the magazines filled out and sent in with that corporate type's name and address.
This went on for about one year, and finally the person mentioned to me what they had done.
I have to confess I thought it was pretty neat, but advised them that there were probably several Federal laws broken as well as a potential Stalking crime perpetrated.

Besides one year of that much junk mail is sufficient to meet anyones idea of getting even.

I've stayed out of this so far but now I have to vent.

It seems that every activity I get involved in evolves....and usually not in a good way.

I like THIS hobby the way it is. I don't agree with everything aobut it but I don't participate in those areas. If letterboxing goes commercial I'll get out. It will save me money anyway. No more buying containers, carving material,paper.....you get the idea.

This website is a different matter. If Ryan wants to put commercial themes in the rotation that's his business. I can read them or ignore them.

Quote That is why the only magazine we read is consumer reports...

I subscribed to CR for a couple of years a couple of decades ago; I really like the idea of a magazine with independent product evaluations. Eventually they did a review on products that I was knowledgeable about -- and I disagreed with their conclusions strongly. Then I thought about it some more, and I went to the library and looked through back issues for reviews of products I knew about -- and I disagreed with their recommendations more often than not. Since I don't agree with their conclusions when I know what they're talking about, why would I ever trust what they say when I don't know anything about the products they're reviewing? Cancelled my subscription.

In "Steal This Book", Abbie Hoffman suggested taking the junk mail with the "Return Postage Paid" cards and slapping them on a brick and mailing it back to the company sending out the junk mail. Perhaps after paying to mail enough bricks to themselves, they'll quit sending out junk mail.

You're definitely not the only one. Those stupid insert cards are the devil.

The other thing I hate in them? Two page (front and back) drug ads. I tend to rip those out before I read the magazine, too. I know magazines need advertisers to survive, and drug companies seem to pony up the money hand over fist, but ugh...how many Claritin-D ads does one person need to see in a lifetime? (I'd totally pay more for a magazine with less/no advertising, too. S'why I usually pick up Mary Jane's Farm, in fact.)

One of my favorite shows ever. The episode where the Brain became a country music star just about made me bust a gut.

LOL!!! Whenever someone asks "Are you thinking what I'm thinking" - my answer is ALYWAYS - "I think so Brain, but burlap chafes me so".

Quote First thing I do with every magazine that comes in the house is go through and rip out those dang things and put 'em in the recycling bag. I hate flipping through a magazine and stutter-stopping on a subscription card.

Also perfume ads with the scent strip. *koff* *gag* *wheeze*

I have an origami book that has several patterns for those dratted things. I need to relearn those designs, and can then fold and leave origami things around offices or whatnot.

I don't subscribe to many magazines anymore (darn budget) but I do get a couple - I could leave origami surprises all over town!

*TMI ALERT* The squeemish may wish to look away now...

At my house, we use those pesky inserts to pick up cat puke. One in each hand, scoop them together under the mess, and viola! Then a swipe with a paper towel dampened with some cleaning solution and we're done. We only subscribe to a few magazines, but they seem to provide plenty enough kitty-puke-scoopers! Or maybe I should now call them "blow chunks cards?"

Again, using the typical disclaimers, it wasn't me, etc...

Someone I know had a similarly nasty corporate type they had to deal with. So this person went online and filled out all kinds of forms for x-rated sites, s&m sites, etc. using the corporate person's home email and snail mail addresses. Did it from a public computer so they couldn't trace the ip address back to them.

Be careful who you pick on you power-mad corporate types!

Quote McBoxer a few days ago had said,

" But the discussion mutated from the original intent of "promoting letterboxing through promotional tie-ins" into "corporate logos on letterboxing gear". Not exactly the same thing."

Now, McBoxer, we have drifted fully off subject. Is that a dead lemur I smell?

Quote A promotional theme would be professionally done, look good, and generate extra revenue for the site.

That's a cute thought, but apparently you haven't seen much web advertising in your life. "Look good"? Like the blinking, screaming colors or the stupid dancing aliens I keep seeing everywhere? The mind reels...

I'm a designer- here's a possible idea. People could create custom themes and share them with others. Maybe charge a nominal fee. And if it's about supporting Atlas Quest/Ryan, we (meaning designers) could donate the fees to the site/sitemaster.

Maybe?

I love lots of different themes, and would love if people created all sorts of interesting ones. I don't know about charging a fee for them, but by all means, for you creative types out there, create some fun themes and share them others. =)
