Listen to this one.........

I'm sure we all have the itchies to get back out there and do what we love to do, right? Listen to this one......Today Pixie Search'n and I decided to go out and enjoy the nice sunny day we were all having by doing a little letterboxing. You know, curb some of the winter time itchies.

Without too much fret we found what we were looking for. This was great, how exciting finially another find to add to the list. There is was in the trunk of the tree cover with just a bit of snow. Not such a big deal right? But then here comes trouble.....problem was the box was turned upside and was completely surrounded with ice. There was no possible way with what we had out there with us today that we were going to get that box out of there without doing some damage to the box itself.

Can you believe it, there it was right in front of us! We even had our hands on it and still couldn't get it!!!!! Know I really have to wait til spring so the darn ice will thaw and I can get back to this box I had my hands on today!!!!

Then if that weren't crazy enough, we just stood there for a few minutes after we decided to give up (I HATE giving up by the way) and off in the woods a little ways I seen something that caught my eye. Today we put our hands on our 1st Geocasche.

Have yet to really understand the whole Geocasche thing, but hey we found something just not exactly what we went out looking for.

Crazy day just wanted to share,

Mully :)

Same thing happened to me today. The box we found was planted in a dranage ditch and I could see the edge of teh box under about 2 inches of ice. Then I went to go rescue one of my boxes that was to close to the river (the park had been closed for a few weeks so I couldnt' get it when the weater level was rising) but it has washed away, my favorite carving no less only found twice, I honestly didn't realize when planting it how close to the watershed I had placed it.

That's not fair!!!!!!!!! I've heard about people going out in deep snow in New York and other areas, how do they do it I wonder?

I'm sorry to hear about your letterbox, that's very sad! I'm told this is part of the game, but I don't really like it! I've only planted 3, soon I will be planting a lot more. Can't wait to get out there and check up on ours and see how they're doing.

This last fall I planted a HH in a box that was lost after a strong strom that took the tree down. Even though it wasn't actually my HH I still felt responsible. Silly me I guess.

Again, sorry to hear about your loss!

I share in your frustration. We were going to visit the Pioneer Woman's Grave letterbox when we went up to Mount Hood. We chased down an employee in a parking lot to get directions. He looked at me like I was crazy and wanted to know what on earth I wanted to go there for. I was quite taken aback by his response. Like I was an idiot or something. We get there and do know what? They don't snow plow the old highway!!! It was under five feet of snow and no way to get to the locatoin! Grrrrrr! It'll have to be a spring/summer box. The employee's response made sense. He could have just told me though!

Your just like me.....I had the itchies sooo bad that I just wanted to make the best of the day! Not stopping to think about the condition of the box. I'm still taken back today by yesterdays results.

I'll just use this as a learning experience....when I do my plans in the future I'll think of the conditions the box will be under in the winter months.

Thanks for sharing!

I think the issue I had for this winter was the amount of rain we had, it wasn't typical winter snow but a lot of rain, making more ice than snow. I didn't plant my lost box very well, I knew I was down near the edge of the swap but didn't realize the river was nearby,(thats what I get for planing in the dark) I went to get it when I heard about the flash flood warning but the police already had the park roped off, safety first, better the box was lost and no one was hurt. If it weren't roped off I would have gone for it, I did retreve my other box at a different park that I knew was on the river bank and it was UNDER the water, looking back it was probably not what I should have done. I'm not concerned for my lost box, I knew it would happen, I just hopped it was out there for the spring rush. oh well, now I get to carve a new box, thats all.

Bring along a chisel in your bag. Works wonders to get boxes out of ice!

LOL....What a great idea! This is my first winter so it's good to know others are as crazy as I am about this stuff.

I'll now add a chisel to my check list :)

Thank you,

Mully :)

Maybe a lighter too, the metal will get cold, you can heat it up with the lighter to help you get thru the ice just a little quicker ; ) Kind of like running an ice cream scoop under water in between dips into the bucket. Just an idea tho, maybe someone else has a reason why this might be a bad idea?
