I'm jumping in a little late on this, but I highly recommend this method of recycling items that have plenty of use but are no longer wanted in your home. I discovered it in 2004 when I was trying to find a place to recycle my old skis. I hunted and hunted on the internet when I stumbled upon Freecycle. I first joined in Indy and was able to freecycle a case of left-over hardwood flooring ($150 worth), several less-than-full propane canisters, lighting fixtures, a dishwasher, epson printer, curtains, and yard sale leftovers. It wasn't worth my time to sit around a second day to sell a dozen items for 25 cents apiece. I posted an offer and within 15 minutes I had a handful of requests and one local person came and took it all. She was shocked at what I was giving away ... corelle casserole dishes that looked brand new and a number of wedding gifts that were still in boxes. We had to downsize our kitchen in our new house, so I wasn't sad to be free of these items. After our move, I was able to give away all my moving boxes (a very popular Wanted item). I've given away free carpet and other items left behind from the prior owners.

Join a local group. I am subscribed to the Cincy East group to help my sister. You may want to join and view all the postings to see what kind of items are wanted and offered. I bullied my sister to get rid of some items. Procrastination is a bad thing. They remodeled their kitchen last summer and they still had new carpet (1 year old) and working dishwasher in the garage. They don't have a truck to take it to charity and they weren't willing to rent one. I posted the 2 items and within 30 minutes she had a choice of about 20 members wanting her items. Within 3 hours both items were off her property. She's so happy to get the car back into the garage.

The mission of The Freecycle Network is simple; to keep useful items out of landfills before their time. I was shocked to see a perfectly good picnic table being tossed away as I entered the landfill last year. What I might consider junk might be the one thing someone else is looking for.

It's a good thing!

The only Wanted I ever posted ...

WANTED: Smithsonian Magazine, April 1998. Never got a bite. Can't say I'm surprised.

I've posted several wanted's and had no response . . . but that's okay. The members just didn't have it when I (or my friend that I posted it for) needed it.

But 2 years ago, I bought a pre-lit Christmas tree, so I offered my old one, that was still in great condition, and it went immediately!

My old deep freezer quit working, so I posted a wanted and got an immediate response!

I've given, and gotten, many things off Freecycle. I really do like it, and the people you get to meet are very nice!

LS---I don't think the bad weather was supposed to start until this afternoon. I hope your daughter sneaks in before any of it starts down there "in your neck of the woods". (As Al Rooker would say)

We keep hearing that the southern part of the state is going to get rain and thunder storms?! While the Toledo area might get up to a foot of snow....and then the rest of us inbetween get to guess?!?! =)

I'm sure you are going to really enjoy having your daughter HOME!!!! NICE!

Hugs to you all---only not so hard of a hug with your dh. Has he recovered a good bit????

Yeah, I picked up those ducks every time I walked by them. Ducks in the middle of no where???

I have to admit, I picked up three of them and checked them too. lol. Someone was standing back watching all of us and getting a real good laugh.

It's already hit Xenia. We've got about 2" of snow and it's still falling hard. Get that shopping done quick.

Well, while I was away from my computer and doing the laundry, picking up, paying the bills and wrapping presents, IT SNOWED!!!!! Now it has stopped and hopefully is not freezing into ice before the usually 20 minute drive to the airport.

It is really pretty right now.

The "ex"Harley guy is doing better; started physical therapy yesterday (don't understand why that took so long to do) and he can move his arm some. The bottom line is that he is frustrated that he hasn't healed faster - but at 53 I guess that he now realizes that he is not as young as he thinks!!! We have not yet discussed the future regarding motorcycling. The Harley was considered totaled (although it look mostly fine to me) so we no longer own one. That helps. When spring comes, who knows what will happen.

Have a safe day everyone.

Now that you are all talking about Freecycle, it just occured to me that my oldest son listed about 20 shrubs when he bought his home in Columbus. I helped them dig them up and load them....and they could not believe Brad was willing to give away these really nice shrubs and we couldn't believe someone would come get them! It was enough to fill one of those smaller city dumpsters though!

I really appreciate you all sharing about this GREAT opportunity!!!

I think I'm going to bring information to our next monthly Roundtable for Boy Scouts in our county!

No advance trip to Hocking hills this day.

PS....you and I had the same idea. I had everything ready to go to go down there and get some box maintenance done.

That's okay....plenty to do here at home!!! Like find the candles and matches, and generator and snow shovel lined up!

And so our intrepid hero sits dejected, snow has begun to fall outside of his window covering the vast barren expanse of farm fields. No advance trip to Hocking hills this day...no new boxes to find, merely left to the mundane of laundry, cleaning and cooking. No adventure this day, just steadfast to home and hearth as the travel lanes disappear under a depressing winter snow.

Quite a poet that Pioneer Spirit
Read his words and thought I could hear it!
No travel or boxes this day for him
Just sitting at home all bummed out and grim!

I bought my generator in the ice storm a couple of years ago. Two days without heat and my brother who was staying with me was freezing, so I call Lowes which is about 4 min. away. A big truck load of generators had came in. I drove over and brought back a 750 dollar generator. We were getting ready to get it hooked up and started...yes, the rest of the story... the electricity came back on. I have a brand new generator in my garage . Never been used.

Hey Dr. Watson---we got our generator the very same year and if it weren't for my two oldest scouring Columbus, we would have been in real trouble. It ended up being a "funny" story because it was like the Funk household goes Jeff Foxworthy Redneck-style for Christmas.

I think our electricity was out for 5 days. Both Brad and Doug came home here because they were frozen out too. We blocked off as many rooms as we could and had a fire going in the fireplace. There were also those orange or green electrical cords laying everywhere and would rotate plugging in the refrigerator v. a space heater v. our Christmas tree!

Greg just happened to call from Baghdad on Christmas Eve during his first deployment there and we took turns talking to him. When we described all of this and roasting semi-frozen hotdogs on a coat hanger over the fire---Greg said, "I can't believe I'm gonna say this but I might actually be glad I'm in Iraq right now?!"

Maybe that will be the picture for my Christmas card carving next year?! =)

I didn't mention that I am baking a cake too.

Pioneer Spirit, I have a man as good as you. He has scrubbed down both bathrooms and a bedroom and shampooed the carpets. I have packed up all of my LB supplies neatly and have emptied a big file cabinet and condensed it to a small one. We have a realtor coming on Monday so we are trying to stage the house for listing. It would be easier to just bulldoze the place.

Right now I'd rather be baking too. Sounds like fun!

They say pumpkin pie spice is the most attractive scent (and I agree). Maybe bake one tomorrow and hope the reminder lingers.

Wishing you the best of luck in selling quickly.

That same storm, the electric was out here for 3 days.

That storm has great memories for me! (But not my dad!) Dad's power went out very near to Christmas Eve, which is when the whole clan gathers at his house. So, off to Westerville to big bro's house we all go. Of course we self sufficient folk here on the prairie did not lose power, so we talked the ol' man into trekkin' out here later Christmas Eve and spending the night with us! I think we actually had him here two days! Got to make him breakfast, go for a moonlight walk on our frozen road, play cards...all the fun holiday stuff that never lasts long enough on that one Christmas Eve.

Now this year...my ol' man has a new "friend" that we're all hoping to meet! :)

Oh, and PS, good for you for also bring self sufficient and a liberated man! My manly man is an electrician and put in a generator for us a few years back too, just in case, and of course, like DrWatson said, we've never had to use it! On the domestic side of that he's the one that does our floors all the time! Gotta love it! (But a cake? No, that's just asking too much!)
Happy Snow Day everyone!

Mama Huntin Dog (whose tryin to...

Strike that...first of all "who IS tryin to..." Man, if my 5th graders saw me make a typo like that they'd hang me up by my toenails in the hall! (A common threat I make to them. :))

decide if she can make it to church or not...)

Second of all...she's not going! You all have inspired me to make my Christmas cookies! And fudge! MiFan300 watched the Food Network last night (while helping me get my students' gifts ready) and now wants to make a gingerbread house, so we'll probably be going up for molasses and ginger, too! But first, Swedish Tea Cakes! Yum, yum, yum!

Oh..yeah...papers to grade...grr. BUT, I'll grade them while the cookies are baking! Not too bad!

AND, maybe I'll start on the New Year's Resolution stamp...It'll have something to do with getting a certain series of stamps on a certain hilltop/mountaintop in a certain southern Ohio locale planted by a certain liberated man we all know and love! :) Darn, now I've gone and given it away! :)
