singing strings... and kites wings!

Mama Wolf talking about how the kids could have played with those strings in the winds of the OBX forever... it made me think of the joys I have gotten... as an adult... flying a kite.

my entire childhood i tried to fly kites around here... NO fun watching it lie on the ground.
I thought i was an idiot.

flash forward 25 years... me... the kids... Charleston area beach and a 20 cent clearance sale kite.
I assembled it thinking how crappy my boy or girl might feel if he failed at this like I always did.

I stood up... held the kite up and started telling them what to do (like I knew anything on kite flight) when the multi colored glider took off... straight up... but pitching it's nose from side to side like a hand waving at me. The goosebumps were as big as boulders.
Up... up... up some more. It went up till I didn't have much string left...
and it flew and flew and flew! I laughed and giggled (the kids called it tickles).
wow!

I would try to hand it off to one of the kids... "No momma. You do it."
I couldn't figure it out. why didn't they wanna do this? They stood there watching with these big wonderful smiles and sweet giggles excaping into the wind... why not? Finally I asked... why?
I can still hear those little voices... "You do it Momma."
and then one of them said "Your tickles are fun."

Growing up in Michigan, we always flew kites in the spring. I missed the wind when I moved here (that's about the only thing I missed). We used to get several reels of string and put them together and send the kite up until we couldn't see it anymore. Our parents insisted on paper only kites so if it got in a tree it was biodegradeable. We then stuck the sticks in the ground saying we were putting it on "auto-pilot" and left it there until the evening before rolling lots and lots of string back in!

I remember my mother taking us out to my Aunt Diane's to fly a kite for her. She was in the last stages of MS and really missed being able to do that. That day it was a challenge to get one up, but we finally did it. I can't see a kite without remembering her now.

Kites are one of the very few, rare childhood memories I have that are good. And we got to see many lovely kites while in the OBX (some of them pulling waterskiers!).

Well, it's got to be where there's wind! And not in Mama Fox's outhouse! Okay, maybe there's wind there, but not that kind!

*snort*
even with the wind in there...
not quite enough room for flying kites and singing strings ;)
