Great Story......

..... some hikers were walking in the woods. For some reason they decided to go off trail and explore a large rotting tree stump. After pulling out most of the debris from the large hole, they found our letterbox! They opened it up, read the log book, examined the stamp, took the AQ card(which we leave in every box), rehid it safely and then went home to look up AQ on-line and learn about letterboxing!
Well, The Woodlandwanderers are now registered and eager to hit the trails in search of more treasures. How awesome! We never knew if this paperwork would prove useful and it most definitely has! If you don't already use these, perhaps you should! Ryan has done all the work. Just look in the toolbox section. We add one Logbook insert and one Info sheet card to every box. If you use cover stock, you can print the info sheet double sided (Marjorie on one side - wording on the other) and cut them into nice business card sizes. Add these to your boxes and perhaps you will have a similar success story to tell (instead of a missing box!).
Thanks Ryan!

I have been taping the info to the lid of my box and the bottom of my box...I think this is a great idea!

Great outcome, but you should also take it as a warning: You need to hide your boxes better. Hiding in a spot where passersby are tempted to dig and explore is just asking for a missing box.

Kirbert I can tell you from firsthand experience that the Pranksters know how to hide their boxes. I think it's probably more likely that some muggles saw some unstealthy boxers find the letterbox. I highly doubt the hiding spot is the issue. :)

No need to hide better. This is a great plant OFF the trail. If a hiker is going to go off trail and dig out a stump to find out how much decay is happening, the best you can hope for is an outcome like this. The other option would be to never use any stump anywhere and assume that all hikers are just stump diggers and not rock lifters! No matter what, there is always a risk that a box might disappear - Especially if you have a lot of boxes planted out there!

.....and here's the latest quote from them:
We had such fun that we did the Dr. Seuss One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish today. It was great fun. We will continue to do more of the local letter boxes and will probably make and post some of our own for people to find.
Yeah! - they are already thinking about a planting!!! :o)
Isn't AQ awesome? We think so!!

Pranksters...
I know the box in question and it certainly is well hidden! You know how long it took us just to find these in the first place... The rotting stump in question is unique enough that it could prompt exploring!
Very cool story! There are plenty of boxes to keep them busy! It will take us all year just to catch up with them all!
Yeah! for new boxers who take the time to learn the ropes and use the information out there! I always include the AQ cards and wonder if it is a waste of time! Now I know it is not!
Hope all is well with you and your four legged family member! Happy Thanksgiving!

How fun for you!
In my area, both Freebird and WalkinOrange discovered letterboxes by accident. One box had been kicked out of a log (probably by an animal) and another had been washed down stream from it's hiding spot and they found the exposed boxes by accident. They have both since been with the hobby for a while now and planted quite a few for me to find (and are the only ones willing to go on long hikes with me). AND they give me help maintaining the local boxes.
For a couple of great 'boxers to be acquired like that, it was worth sacrifing a box (but I didn't have to -- they both saved those boxes that were sitting in the open). :)

Another great story! Thanks for sharing. And yes, these new letterboxers have already hit more boxes and did some quick maintenance on one that had a water issue!!! WooHoo! :o)
They are "off and hunting"! It's so fun to see the new excitement that was generated here - all thanks to Ryan's little cards!!!

Kirbert - why rain on someones parade? A great little success story and all you have to say is - you didn't hid well ,learn from your mistakes!! It was great to read from other people that the box was hidden well and The Merry Pranksters are good planters. Cute story Merry pranksters, when I start planting I will definitely put the info cards in my boxes!

Hey guys - don't worry about that comment. He actually had a point since I never mentioned that it was a good hide in the first post. But interesting spots do draw attention where ever they are and planted boxes are always at risk. We've lost a few. It does happen. No Biggie - the recarves are usually much better!!! :o)
............ anyone want to go check the status of our "missing" Bahama box? Wish we could. It's getting cold up here - Brrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
Peace,
