We made little "Litterbugs" to put in some of our letterboxes. It's a film canister with a plastic grocery bag stuffed into it. The finder can take it with them, take the bag out and collect trash on the way out of the park. Then they can replace the pastic grocery bag with a new one and place the "litterbug" in the next LB they find. We put a little lable on the outside of the canister to explain what it was.

that is an awesome idea!

on my last LB outing we picked up some trash we saw and on our way out saw someone along the trail with a small garbage bag...we asked to put it his bag (he was out collecting trash--we asked) we knew there was not a trash can at the trail entrance.

made me think of making sure I have a small garbage bag on me when I hit the trails though!

The "litterbug" idea is a GREAT one -- easy to implement in a larger box and user friendly. Good idea M!

Just so happens a scout friend of mine handed me a brown paper bag full of film canisters...(hey I can only make so many neckercheif slides and cooties with them). Now I have an even better use for them.
Please feel free to drop one in any of my boxes you may visit for others to use!

Great great idea!

Thanks,
MLR

If you combine this with the idea, I think it was Kirbert's, of attaching the stamp to the inside of the canister lid, you could make a FLEA with a purpose.

Can you send me a sample of your label?

Privately send me your non-AQ email address and I can send it as an attachment.

We haven't specifically picked up trash on the trail, but I think it's no problem to add a plastic grocery bag to the pack and make it our mission to fill the bag each trip.

We do make an effort to clean up everything when we can see a trash can. Of course, this is a great way to pick up Coke reward points for the Nintendo DS that Z is saving up for. At least he has a goal. :) We also collect pop tabs for our donation to Ronald McDonald House. I just keep a ziploc in our pack and we have a quick washing session when we get home. With children, it's just as important to teach them about clean up as it is to teach them about not trashing the place to begin with.

A lot of people seem to really like this idea (and I am one of them!).
Maybe GT can add "Litterbug" to the glossary, and add your label to the form centre?

That's great, too! So many neat ideas today!!

the plastic grocery bags are a definite plus on the trails for many uses..
kneal/sit on when the ground is wet, garbage picking, doggie 'cleaning', I even made a rain hat out of one when caught in a brief rain storm, quite a sight, but it worked! (glad my Sis didn't have her camera!)
I never leave home without one and most times end up using it for one function or another

At the last few events we've been to - this has been incorporated into the event. The hosts have even supplied film canisters with bags inside that you can leave in larger boxes that are labelled "Box in - Trash Out!" That way if you get to a box where there's lots of trash - you have something to put it in on your way out!
