UPDATE!

I went back (again) tonight to try to retrieve the box. Since the BBQ tongs didn't even reach it, I tried a coat hanger. But, what should happen, I DROP THE COAT HANGER!!!!! But, as luck should have it, I still had the BBQ tongs in the van. So, here I am again with my arm stuck in this tree up to my pits trying to retrieve the coat hanger with the BBQ tongs. Finally, I got the coat hanger! We bent the coat hanger open ALL the way this time, and went digging again. My hubby tried and tried to get it, and after many attempts and a few choice words, he gave up. I thought I'd try one more time, dipped in down in there, and instantly felt weight to it. Hoping I had the box and not a dead animal or something, I slowly pulled up on the wire . . . MY BOX!!!!

I'll never test the depth of a hole again with the actual box in hand.

Glad you found it! It is amazing the lengths we'll go to to plant and find! My hubby would have never gone to begin with : )

Having a dead animal, I mean to say. Was using a stick trying to retrieve a letterbox and got myself a very dead, well-decayed animal.

But I've also gotten plenty of boxes without dead animals attached as well. *nodding*

I was once looking to find a hiding spot for a long, slender box that would fit well in a typical cranny in a tree. I found a cranny, surprisingly high off the ground, like five feet or so. It looked like a place where a branch once was but had rotted away leaving a hole in a live tree. I couldn't see the bottom of the hole, so rather than just drop the box to see how far in it went, I tied a string to it and pushed it in. It kept going in, way too far. When I pulled it back out with the string, it was covered with a zillion spiders. I don't even mind spiders, but it was amazing how many got on that box in the ten seconds or so it spent inside that hole.
