There's a lavender farm near us that allowed a geocahing box to be placed there. I think they figured it would be free advertising, which works to the benefit of both owner and LBer. (Might be worth considering that angle when you talk to your retailer.) The farm is beautiful and they sell all kinds of oils, lavender buds, scented creams, etc.

Sadly, there is a guy in our area who calls himself the Nude Cacher (or something similar). Needless to say the farm owners got really upset with this guy taking off all his clothes to take a picture of himself with the cache box (he's always posed so certain parts are not seen when he posts the pic at the website, but still!) I'm not sure if that box is still there or not...

I hate it when one person ruins it for everyone else...

I have boxes planted at three small buisinesses in our town. I took a box to the owners and told them what I wanted to do. They were very receptive. And they have all received LOTS of business/exposure from the placement of these boxes. One owner told me he didn't mind if the folks coming in didn't make purchases. He felt like the fact that the people would just tell others about his business was enough.
The only probelm with retail places is that they are always rearranging, so you have to plant in an out of the way spot or a recognizable container. A farm could actually have an outdoor box, thus eliminating that issue.
You also want to make sure that the box is no maintenance for the business owner. If they are getting more work because of your box, they won't want it.

Thanks for all the great advice! I would think the owners would be receptive. The owner is a huge supporter of the campaign "Support your family farm or watch homes grow instead" I have a T-shirt from them that shows a corn field with the slogan "Eat your View"! I would think he would be receptive to anything that will bring more customers...Now I just need to go sell the idea to him!

When I did a letterbox in a store in Charlotte, NC, I carved the stamp first and created the box to show to them. I figured if they didn't like it, I could use the stamp in a Postal, or as a Personal Traveler. Luckily, they really enjoyed the idea. I also showed the manager of the store a variety of clues: Poems, Mystery Clues, Straight forward style clues....and got his input as to how he wanted the box listed. He chose to have it a "mystery box". I had also brought info about other letterboxes that I had found inside businesses, to show him how it was done in other parts of the country.

I can't believe there wasn't a flurry of posts about this - and I can't believe I'm commenting on it!! Where's wassamatta-u when you need him - lol!!

I can't stop laughing to myself at the thought of this guy undressing at each geocache he finds - he either has a seriously warped sense of humor and/or needs professional psychiatric help and/or doesn't have enough to do in his life.

I'm mentally reviewing the local boxes to see what would happen if this guy took up letterboxing in WNC.......... Grove Arcade, Grove Park Inn, downtown Asheville........... watch out!!! And if he does appear here, I'd better move my box at the bagel shop - LOL!!!

You know, if there was a box on Lexington Ave., he wouldn't even raise any eyebrows...

To clarify "blue path", you get a map of the maze when you go through it and they have 3 separate mazes. On their map, one of them is colored blue. However, in the corn maze itself, it's all just corn, corn, corn too!

Here was a response I posted a ways back about getting permission to plant a box on private property.
