Okay, we need several old, darkly stained coffee mugs, an old mystery baked good on the table, an old, broken copy machine shoved in the corner, and strobing fluorescent lighting and I'll feel right at home!

Don't forget some ripped up couches from the 70s.

Before they remodeled our school, we had some couches covered in plaid avocado burlap. Disgraceful. ;) Now our faculty room has cushy chairs, but it's on the third floor, so I seldom get up there. :/

Does anyone still have one of those great ditto machines around. I wonder if a tide stick would have worked on that purple stuff?

Oh yes, how could I forget about the couches with the rips in the center of the cushions and the mysterious stains?

One of our teacher's rooms has one single decoration on the wall. It's a poster titled "How to Break Up a Fight". Fascinating reading, really.

Something coffee colored would suit me just fine. I've also got my own coffee mug. It says, "My body may be here but my mind is on vacation." My high school students loved it.

We will have to give you a visitor's pass. You could always get on the substitute list.

Yes! Our old clunker was (and still is, I suppose) resting in a lovely place of prominence on top of our refrigerator. That's the refrigerator that holds all the Lean Cuisines and moldy old leftovers that someone forgot.

The bathroom in our "English workroom" had a old sign on it that said "Conference Room." Some jokester had found it and put it up there. I wonder if anyone ever got surprised when they opened the door.

Ah ha!!! He didn't say school teacher. I'm my daughter's main "teacher" and a sometimes Sunday School teacher. Does that count? LOL

Actually, that's a very good point. I'm a mom and I'm trying to teach my boys how to survive to 18 without doing themselves permanent damage (an uphill battle most days), so I guess I can hang out here. Though I'll sign up for the sub roster as long as letterboxing excursions count as educational trips. :-)

When you work in a school with 2000 high school students, you are bound to run into a fight every once in a while. I broke up one last year before it started. I knew one of the kids and didn't think he'd punch me if I stood in front of him. Luckily, I was right.

One of the things about the teacher's room that has always really fascinated me is the homemade baked goods that pop up. No one has any idea where they came from, who put it there, but we all dutifully cut off a piece with a plastic knife and eat it. If anyone ever had anything against a group of teachers, all they would need to do was to put a poisoned cake in the teacher's room with plates and forks next to it. You could wipe out an entire staff.

So true! Ah, the mystery baked goods... 8-)

Speaking of huge schools, the first year I taught, my built-for-1600 school was at about 2400, with lots of trailers. I didn't even get a trailer, though. I was a "floater" (which really doesn't sound so nice!) and my home base was our English workroom. Boy is that a good place to hear all the stuff--whether you want to or not. I had a little cart I'd push from room to room and then work at the lunch table during my planning period. The next year I was happy to get a trailer of my very own.

You can take them on my second grade box series. all of the clues are designed as a final for the year for many of the subjects we've learned about! I take my class letterboxing every June :)

Many moons ago we studied maps and learned a bit about geography and the land formations of our state in the 4th grade. I would think a lesson plan using letterboxing could help students become more aware of the outside world. Call it map-making/reading skills, or even orienteering. You can come up with a host of objectives that involve every subject. We didn't have GPS'rs when I was in 4th grade, and somehow, I managed to survive and not get lost. I have heard people my age that swear they would never venture out of the town without a navigational device. I cannot understand why they resign themselves to not learning a life skill that opens so many more possibilities. This lesson activity would be very popular and something the students will remember 30 years from now. What I remember about my 4th grade year was our year-long project. I chose to report on our state parks and I compiled a scrapbook that was pretty impressive (with no help from parents, btw). Good luck and let us know how the lesson plan works out.

hey what about an old Gestetner machine?
Anyone remember those??
Now, I will admit I had ..just.. started teacher training when we had to use those.
Remember the drum, and clicking the handle for the number of copies you needed.
man that makes me sound so old!!!

hey sprite, just use really big words, they will never look them up and be so impressed with your educational training that you can take the kids anywhere and they will even pay for it. Maybe even Hawaii......or alaska, there are boxes there and education....yeah you can do it!!! You know just write a GRANT!

My school is way too broke and uptight to pay for field trips, so I've planned to hide letterboxes throughout the school and have all the clues implement math skills. (You know, find the hypotenuse of this triangle...now take that many steps to the left.) Kinda silly, but at least the kids will get an intro to the letterboxing concept. :)
