LB Con1: Phase II

For the past day I have sat back and watched the ideas flow! It has been so much fun to watch everything everyone has said! There have been some great ideas and suggestions! One of my favorite ideas is Oread's suggestion to see if Lock n' Lock and Ziplock would set up a booth at the event. That is brilliant! A few more ideas like that and this event will really be taking shape quickly! The possibilities are endless! We are limited only by our imaginations. We must brainstorm and figure out which ideas to use!

As far as the Date and Location go, there is no way we will be able to make everyone happy when they are officially picked and announced. Just remeber that if it is not in an area you would have picked the first year, there are always other years. What's perfect for someone may be terrible for another. I know quite a bit of research will need to go into this. There are so many different factors to take into account. I am willing to do the work but I can't do it alone! Which brings us to why I used the pronoun "we" in all my above statements. It is painfully obvious to me that the decisions are going to need to be made by a committee of planners. This is way too big for one person to plan. If your are interested in helping me to plan this event, and think you have some trait or skill that will come in handy for planning something like this, please contact me via AQ mail. I ask you to contact me only if you are willing to dedicate yourself to going the full distance from the conception stages to the day of the event. If we as a community are going to be depending on someone in this committee to be responsible for a certain aspect of the planning, we can't have them losing interest and doing a substandard job. I want this event to be everything people could imagine! I do not have a set in stone number of how many people should be on this committee, but I think ten should be about the right number. So contact me if you are the right person for the job!!! I already know that there will be times where we may ask for help from the general public throughout the planning process. One place I know of off the top of my head we will eventually ask for help with, is the logo for the event. I stink at drawing and I am sure there are a bunch of graphic artists out there who could come up with some awesome logos that maybe we could vote on or something. I have already decided that everyone who comes to this event will be needing, and therefore getting, a patch of the eventual event logo! How cool will that be on every one's backpacks?!?!?!

The Next thing I would like to announce is that there is now an Event Listing For LB Con1. If you are thinking about coming to this event, I ask you to please sign up for it here: http://www.atlasquest.com/events/event.html?gEventId=481 I have it temporarily listed as January 1st 2009. Obviously that is NOT the date this event will be held, but AQ makes you put in a date. Seeing as how pretty much everyone agreed it should be somewhere beyond 2008 I figured I would just use that date. I understand that this event doesn't yet have a location set and some people will likely change their RSVP depending on where it is. Not to mention by then some people that could afford it now might not be able to afford it later. The reason I am asking people to sign up now is so that we have an idea of how big a place we are going to need to rent for this event. That could play a very large roll in where this ends up being held. So If you think you would be likely to travel for this event please sign up! The more people we get to attend, the cooler this will end up being. Remember even if you think you could never afford to fly your family across the country, that this event is well over a year away!!!! That is a lot of time to save! Most families could put all their change in a large jug from now, till then, and probably afford to by a couple of plane tickets with that money. That money even seems like free money!!! I would also ask that if you frequent other letterboxing communities, that you spread the word about this event. I pretty much just hang out on AQ so I can't really make announcements to some of the other places where people are that might be interested in coming. But it would be nice if people from other places were added to the RSVP list for counting and planning purposes. Even if that means an AQ'er just adding an extra guest to there RSVP if they know a non-AQ'er is planning on coming.

So in closing, keep the ideas coming, please sign up for the event, and if you are interested in being on the planning committee, please contact me!!!

I hope you are all as excited by the thought of this as I am!

Let it be known,
LB Con is coming!

I was also thinking we could have workshops throughout the LB Con:

  1. mrwndll doing his LB pouches
  2. Kirbert on using a GPS
  3. I forget who posted it, but the cool marker bags that came up recenly
  4. a couple different styles of logbooks
  5. Archimedes screw, lisascenic, true indigo on carving
  6. Mr. Yuk on nude interpretive dance
  7. etc....

Get my drift? Of course I'm just suggesting these folks based on prowess, not on willingness or availability.

Actually, I think Mr. Yuk should do a workshop on camo painting Lock N Locks.

A couple of hours breathing in the paint fumes and he won't need the cash bar!

Hey, I just came up with another idea: How about we establish a tradition that this event switches sides of the Mississippi from one year to the next? If it's E of the Mississippi one year, it must be W of the Mississippi the next year. And if we get carried away and hold one at Dartmoor, that'll count as E of the Mississippi.

Kind of depends which way you get to Dartmoor. If you fly west far enough eventually you're east.

To heck with this silly "national" convention. We're on to bigger and better things. The WORLD letterboxing convention! Sorry LB Con, you're old news now!

That's not a bad idea. It would definately keep one region from having it all the time.

Cool! So, the first one could be in St Louis, MO, and the following year it could be held in St Louis, IL?

Brings to mind that SpongeBob Squarepants episode (I have small children) where Squidward does his version of interpretive dance..."what the???"

I haven't met Mr.Yuk so I'm not comparing the two...it was just the idea of interpretive dance that formed the connection.
