Missing Boxes

I want to offer my sincere condolences to all of you who are losing boxes in CT. It is unimaginable what would drive a person or group to do such a thing. We can only pray that, however unlikely, it is an honest mistake. That whoever is doing it doesn't understand that they are supposed to leave the boxes, and that soon they will realize their idiocy and return them.
And if that doesn't happen, then when the culprits are found and all of you have had your way with them (may I suggest something involving chopsticks, camo tape, lime jello and a weed whacker?) and this horrible incident has passed, I want to offer any assistance that I can in replacing the letterboxes lost via stamps/logbooks/containers. I am sure there are plenty of others that would jump at the chance to help. Just say the word.

Please let me add mine as well. I really don't understand what some people are thinking. It's one thing to be indifferent to a hobby (although, this is letterboxing!). But it's another thing to be deliberately destructive of something that represents a lot of hard work on the part of planters and brings a lot of people real enjoyment. If someone is deliberately taking the boxes - and it would seem that they are - they must have very empty lives that they have nothing better to do than ruin other people's fun.

I am really sorry to hear all about what is happening. My first thought was is there any connection to that person who left that antiletterbox letter last year. Have they got more organised?

Don't forget you can use the F count on your clues to hide them from non AQ-members. Even F1 just stops casual browsers from seeing the clues. Secondly don't forget that the messages on these boards can be read by anyone, you don't have to be an AQ member to read them. So if you have any strategies I would suggest you PM them — which I am sure you already are.

My condolences

Mystery boxes. That's the way to go. Few muggles will bother with them.

This looks like evidence that should be brought to the police.

That note has "irritated spouse" written all over it. If the individual really believed their rhetoric, they wouldn't be engaging in these methods, for the reasons stated in the note.

Wasn't there a post a few weeks ago about someone who removed the stamp from a box and left a note - "the first stamp in our collection!" or something like that. Although I think it far more likely the people doing this know what they're doing, the possibility exists that they do not.

The letter from the anit-letterboxers is very disturbing. It really made me angry.

But, I love the fact that while they berate Lbers for wasting gas and meddling with nature...aren't they doing the same thing? I don't think they're walking or flying to the locations to remove the boxes. I won't even get into how poorly the letter was written.

And if we are littering...aren't the stealing?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that will help. I got a note back from DEP, which said that the only "approved" letterboxes are the ones that the DEP put out themselves. The representative from the DEP went on to say that they would prefer that letterboxes NOT be put in state forests due to some ecological sensitive areas, however with state parks, they didn't know if any rangers had a problem with it.

I'd say, going mystery boxes is the way to go. As for the letter that was put at a letterbox site last year, that letter was found I believe in Georgia. I don't think they would be able to organize something so far from home.

I think it's some person who wants to mess with our brains and get us all bent out of shape.

And they're doing a good job!

It's really unclear what the motive could possibly be...but they're excelling at spreading fear. Hopefully, someone will claim responsibility and explain their motives, but I wouldn't count on it. People like that thrive on misinformation and creating apprehension and uncertainty in their victims.

I'm really impressed with the way that boxers in the area are pulling together to help and support each other. That's the good to come out of this ugly mess.

that letter is disgusting. in a world of war as gas prices... yeah we need something to hope for and be happy about. and as for "put it in sandwich bag to prevent litter." thats still littering!!!! they're doing what they are chastising us for doing.

The letter was left in place of my Poole's Mill Covered Bridge box in Ducktown, GA. So far (fingers crossed) only that one and one other were taken. I'm so disgusted that someone would take the boxes. All they really want to do, no matter what the stated intent is, is spoil the fun for others. Mean, sad people. My thoughts are with everyone in the area.

I still think Mystery boxes is the way to go, temporary art or not. But my favorite part of PI's post was his name for these kind of muggles....."Obnoxers."
