I have my book right next to me. It was an absolute zoo, but moved pretty quickly.

I am still in shock because I just met Joss Whedon while waiting in line to buy it. Geek girl shock.

And now it's time to start reading.

I got mine! I just happened to mention to my 80yr old mother (The Daleswoman) that everyone on AQ was standing in queues to get the latest Harry Potter and that it was madness. That was the end of the conversation.

Just now she arrives home, calls me down to see her and presents me with THE BOOK — £4.99 ($10.18) from the local supermarket, no queues!!!!! My darling mother had been out on her old persons motorised scooter thingy, seen them on the shelves and thought "Oh that must be what she is talking about. What was all the fuss? It is only cheap I'll get it for her".

I can't believe it, I hope none of you have paid outrageous prices, nor been queueing for 2days as they were showing us on TV. Dear Mum LOL

Yay for Mum!!! That's so sweet, and a cute story!

I remember after the Half-Blood Prince came out, we were travelling on vacation, and I saw some copies at the little local supermarket where we always get our provisions for the week. Of course, this was a day or two after it came out, and I'm sure I could walk into one of my local bookstores today and buy one...... I just thought it was cute to see it in a Publix in coastal Georgia.

I went to the library yesterday to return some books, and asked if they already had their copies, wrapped in brown paper being held in the back. The librarian said "Actually, yes - we could get sued if we open them in advance." She said they get 30 copies (for the whole county) and as of yesterday morning, had 119 holds on them. Guess I'm pretty far down the line.... ;-)) I may just break down and get a copy in August when I go back to work.

I take it Kaaren hasn't heard this yet...I think I could probably hear the screams all the way here in Texas.

I have several friends who are librarians here. One of them told me she put extra tape on their copies yesterday, "so she wouldn't be tempted to peek."

DebBee, whose UPS man has STILL not brought the book to her today

I had ordered the 5th book from Amazon thought that I was smart and did not have to wait in any lines, the problem occured when it took 3 days past the date of release to get my book. I went crazy, I could have gone down to my local walmart and had the book that morning and had it read before UPS showed up with the book. I have never gone that route again.

I just looked at the prices of Harry Potters latest on Amazon, actually they are not too bad. $17.99 for a hardback, I think that is pretty good. That is almost as cheap as a normal paperback over here.

HUH? Do you have really expensive paperbacks there or what? Our paperbacks are normally around $6 or $7.

Check out the reading room board. There's been a lot of speculation there.

Well of course as with everything the price varies, but yes your paperbacks do seem a lot cheaper.

For a newly published paperback you would pay £4.99 - 6.99 upwards, which is $10.18 - 14.26

Of course you can buy cheap paperbacks for around £2.99 ($6.10) or even cheaper, but those would be old titles in the supermarket or something.

I figured out my problem. I was waiting for the UPS man to ring the bell, when all the time, the book was sitting out in the mailbox, because they sent it by the postal service!

. That and I also ordered a UK copy. I really don't need three copies of the same book.

Sisters at heart!
I have a copy ordered from Amazon Canada, because it will have the same language as the original British edition, and went to the store this am and bought an auxiliary US copy so I can find out what happens NOW!

Although I have other people in my house we can share copies with - but we go in the order of fastest reader first - so that means me first and then AfghanPenguin.

Much the same thing I was thinking after buying mine yesterday at Wal-Mart for $18.99. Walked in to get laundry detergent, walked out with "THE BOOK" (and doing the happy dance, I might add). CDQ and I had a discussion about the craziness surrounding the release and how much of it was media hype, but I'm still glad I have my copy so I can read it before anyone spoils the end for me.

Oh, and so far, it's great!!!!

We did the same thing. Actually, Book 5 DID come on time from Amazon the next day, but we saw all these people outside our little book shop watching movies and such on the sidewalk, so we decided to get the 6th one in town (just bought it that night) and preordered it from them for this last one (just signed for it and left). It was really fun and we had the book in hand within 10 minutes.

My friend in Texas had a less glamorous, but equally easy experience. She stood in line at the Kroger's and was #11 where we were #37 in line. She said it was better than fighting to go all the way into Plano to stand in line at Borders or something and not leave for hours.

Hah! I walked into Meijer at around 1:00 am, no line, hardly anyone there even. The book was $19.99, but if you purchased $30 worth of other stuff (which I can easily do at Meijer - and it was stuff I needed anyway), you got $7 off the book, so I only paid $12.99.
