Ok. I know this is going to sound weird, but when I was a student at Clarkson University, we used to pile into a car and go drink "yards" at some place in Canton, and then go visit the 'Tuba Man." This was a handmade rural style mailbox that when you opened it, lights went on, and you could see a little handmade miniature man playing a tuba while tuba music played in the background. For some reason, this was a rite of passage when I was in school there and I just wondered if anyone else remembers this? I can't even remember where the Tuba Man was located...but that was usually because I was squished into the car with about 8-10 people and could barely see where I was going!

Even if you ARE crazy, this sounds really cool! I hope someone knows something about this so I can see a pic or something!

I've never heard about this and I just graduated from St. Lawrence this past May....

The daughter of a friend of mine graduated from clarkson a couple years ago , I will check with her & let you know if she knows what you are talking about. Does sound pretty cool though.

Well, I didn't get over to Canton too often when I lived in Pierrepont, but I don't remember any Tuba Mail or crazy mailbox... but drinking yards...where was that again...the Tick Tock...the Hoot Owl...?

The man that has a tuba mailbox - I don't know if its the same mailbox - is Varick Chittenden that lives near Canton.

I would imagine its still there though I don't know its exact location. When I went to school at SLU no one mentioned it (hadn't heard it until you said something). I've found a couple different addresses online - maybe we'll have to go on a hunt for it during the gathering. There is an address for him for Judson st. and west main street.....
