Desperately Seeking Sun update
Board: Dead Horses, Lemurs, and Kittens!

Yes, yes, it's true I am moving to Connecticut. But I am STILL going to host SUN in New York. It will be a nice homecoming trip for me and I wouldn't miss it for the world. So many great carvers..so many great boxers...how could I leave all that behind?

But I wanted to make an announcement for a new event at SUN. Sometimes the weather can be brutal, and it's no fun to be outside. And there aren't many more trails we can fill at that park so I will probably only plant a dozen new boxes for that area. Those of you who are used to attending events so you can add 50 boxes to your count would probably not be interested in this, but maybe others will take this and run with it....

We will be hosting a Letterboxing Talent Show. Yep. Got a talent? Can you tie it to letterboxing? Then come and show us what you got! Can you recite a limerick about letterboxing? Play a little song you wrote about letterboxing? How about an impersonation of your favorite letterboxer? Any letterboxing jokes you would like to share? Can you perform a funny skit about letterboxing? We'll take 'em all!

The only thing is...this will be kept on the downlow. People can contact me via AQ mail or email about what they want to do. I will not be posting the acts. If you get cold feet at the last moment, you can bow out and no one will be the wiser. Or if you want to surprise a fellow boxer by doing a tribute to them, it will be a complete surprise! So drop me a note if you're gonna be there, and you have an act/talent you'd like to perform. We'd love to have you! This should be very entertaining! Don't have a talent or an act? So what? We need audience members too!

Is the talent that bad that it needs to go on the Dead Lemurs board? =)

I know..I didn't scroll far enough when I first wrote the post...next thing I know I'm on the Dead Lemurs!

After I posted, I heard from a leftcoaster that they are planning the same thing for their gather...so we will have to stack up Left Coast vs Right Coast and see what they can come up with!

On a good day I can walk and chew gum at the same time, but only for a short distance before I get confused...

I'd rather watch a talent show, or a Rubic's Cube being solved, or even someone walking and chewing gum at the same time
than watch a poor dead lemur being beaten

Thanks guys

Huh? What kind of Rubic's Cube has squares that are 2x2x2?

I used to have one that was 4x4x4 but I never figured out how to solve that one. I could get the top three layers done, but that last layer.... never figured out how to make it work. I'd just have to solve one side and make sure when I showed off my solving skills that nobody could see the other sides. =)

Yep! It's called the 'Pocket Cube'. It's advertised as 'A Rubik's Cube for the Rest of Us' (at least, sometimes :D)
I have two of them, plus a third, smaller one that a friend of mine got me in NY- it's got 5 pink sides and one green side, and one of the pink sides has a monkey's face on it. The idea is that first you solve the green side, then you try to solve the monkey's face side, then both- and once you do, you're well on your way to figuring out the rest.

I've carried that 2x2x2 with me while working on my other ones, and shown it to people...they almost always say 'Oh, I can do THAT one!'.
I'm usually finished with my larger cubes by the time they give up on it. Only one person has ever actually finished that one in front of me- and I don't know if she could do it again :D

*shaking head*

I'm still fond of the 3x3x3 cube. =)

I used to have a 4x4x4, long ago. Took me a while to work it out, but eventually I found it was in some ways easier than a 3x3x3 because things are less interconnected -- think about it, with a 3x3x3 you're messing around 1/3 of the cube every time you turn a face while with a 4x4x4 you're only messing around 1/4 of the cube. Well, okay, really with a 3x3 you have 26 visible cubes of which 8 get shifted around every time you turn a face (and one gets rotated, but unless you have pictures on the sides of your cube that doesn't matter), and with a 4x4x4 you have 56 visible cubes of which 16 get shifted around when you turn a face: 8 out of 26 is 31% and 16 out of 56 is 29%. Hardly any difference; there goes my whole point. Well, it seemed less interconnected, anyway. The 2x2x2 cube (I used to have one of those, too, and also a "cube" in the shape of the head of Darth Maul that was also 2x2x2) is *very* interconnected -- every face turn messes around half the cubes. So it's harder than it looks.

I used to have a 3x3x3 cube with only 3 colors, too. In some ways that's easier and in some ways actually harder -- there are, for instance, two edge cubes with red and white faces, but they aren't interchangeable without interchanging two other edge cubes too. So you have to make sure you get each in the "right" place.
