What about a chat feature?

I'd like a chat feature, but there are two problems with such a feature at this time:

  1. The time it would take to create one from scratch.
  2. The load it could put on the server.

Okay, I know there are "free" chat programs out there, but I tried that once and it didn't work too well. Buggy, terrible thing that it was. Even ones that don't have those problems are more like stand-alone programs, and I'd like to integrate such a feature into Atlas Quest much better than a stand-alone program would allow. Not to mention that I love the idea of creating a chat room from scratch. I find it very satisfying to reinvent the wheel. =) It's fascinating trying to figure out how things like message boards are designed and work, and I enjoy doing that. I have little doubt I'd enjoy developing a chat room from scratch as well, and integrating it into the rest of the AQ code base.

But developing a chat room from scratch will be a lot of work, which is the main reason I haven't started that yet.

I also have concerns about the load it could put on the server if a lot of people try using it at once. A hundred people pinging AQ every few seconds could cause severe problems with the server. I'd definitely have to put extra effort into making sure the code is extraordinary fast and efficient and can handle the loads, but even then I can't be sure if my efforts would be enough.

So the chat feature will likely not happen anytime soon. I do like the idea, though, and it is on my to-do list. To be done.... someday.... Or at least try to create one and if it crashes in flames, that's okay too. =)

If you are worried about too many people on at the same time, it could be a premium member "perk" =o) Ok, so there are lots of premium members too, but I still think there are fewer premium members than regular members.... just a thought.

Cheers!
Rhea (who is thinking she does not need any more reasons to sit on AQ all day long =o)
