This is a cautionary tale!!!!
For those that read the lastest Detective story played out on the main and newboxer list a short time back, here is the story of the Golden Groover. Why is it posted here under this topic, well I believe the final resting place for the groover is probably somewhere along a trail and if you find a large ammo can painted gold..DO NOT OPEN!

Don

Many of you know that our family has done a bunch of white water rafting and have traveled on several rivers. One of the really great float trips is the San Juan and obtaining the private permit is very difficult, so we were elated to nab an early April permit. River trips are set up so that everything, and I do mean everything comes off the river. This happened to be a period of time when the Forest Service and NPS were figuring out new rules and regulations concerning toilet facilities. They were not happy with the tried and true compactor bags in a rocket box that is called a “Groover” by river folk.

Now I digress a bit as some of you are wondering how the heck it ever got that name. Well it seems sometime in the 1970’s a river guide on an Outward Bound trip forgot the toilet seat and on a multi-day trip the edges of that rocket box created several grooves in the posteriors of the river runners.

So while the FS and NPS were searching for the perfect replacement they were open to different types of “Groovers”, and a friend built one from a different type of rocket box and painted it in glorious gold with a special fitted seat. The Groover worked really well and held all of our deposits of the twelve folks on this 5day trip. Coming off of a river trip is a special time as everyone is really “up” from being on the trip, but at the same time you long for those little things that you have missed such as hot showers, malted milks, real beds, or just hanging out in civilization. So you end up packing your stuff fairly quickly and someone is always assigned Groover duty. This duty is where they have to find a dump station and deal with the contents. Our daughter and 3 other young ladies, all of legal age were on this trip and who better to deal with the difficulties of life, they got Groover duty. After their shower they found a cowboy bar that was having a men’s’ tight levi contest that evening so while they should be handling their duties, instead the Groover sat in the back of a pickup and they were ogling men.
Upon return to their truck they found that the cargo netting had been cut and some drybags were stolen along with, yep “The Golden Groover”. The local police were called and were fairly confused as they had no clue what a Groover was. Our daughter described in detail advising that it was about 24 inches square by 30 inches high and a glorious gold in color. She kept referring to it as the “Groover” and the police officer remained confused. Finally he asked what this “Groover” was used for, and after the explanation immediately put out an all points bulletin for somebody that is so dumb they would steal crap. He could hardly finish writing his report. I often wondered what that thief thought when he opened up that glorious gold box.

Quote He could hardly finish writing his report.

If it had been me, I wouldn't even have known how to BEGIN my report.

When I saw "groover" I thought was the same word as a Sesame Street puppet.

Hello everybodeeeeeeeee! It is I, Grover

Quote I keep a few little trinkets (NOT offuce supplies!) in my bag, just in case I do stumble upon a geocache. this way if I like what is available I can swap out. I actually DO own a GPS . . . maybe I'll hunt down a Geo and see what all the hype is . . .

We have actually found 3 GeoCaches while looking for LB's.... DrWatson found some nifty 50's coins in one down in Chilly town. We left a packet of wet wipes, an ink pen and a golf ball in place. We took 3 as Griffy was w/us too!!! So, now I carry a couple of golf balls and several different types of ink pens to swap and we always have wet wipe packets.

We've also gone looking for Geo's too and are bonefied members of the GeoCache site, but we have not had very much luck in locating these little buggers when we go looking for them. Seems we have better luck not looking for them. And I DO KNOW how to read a GPS
