then there is my missing box. It was reported found, but the finder sent a note that it had slid out of position and she had tried to put it back as close as posible to where she thought it went. It wasn't far from my home, so two days after the find, I was over there to make sure it really was wher it was supposed to be. I couldn't find it. I emailed with the finder, and we met at the site, where she confirmed that it was not wher she had left it. We looked al over the area, and neither of us could find it. With a heavy heart, I went home and marked it as gone. two and a half months later I got a found notice on it. The new finder noted that it was several parking spaces away from wher it was upposed to be, and ont he wrong side of the hedge. They also were not certain wher it belonged, but they gave me precise directions to wher they had left it. I went there that afternoon and recoverd the entire box, stamps, logbook and all. I took it home to scan in the logbook (my grandma is one of the finders and I wanted an image of her stamp before I put it back out in the wild.) The box is now ready to return to its proper place.

thus proving that even if the owner thinks it has gone missing, 'taint necessarily so.

Quote I had a similar experience once and discovered later that I had read over the clues a little too quickly. The indications were there I just didn't catch them since they never actually said "this is an 8 mile trail, all uphill! I've tried to be much more diligent and read more carefully since then.

Then there was the saga of the fat Floridians touring New Hampshire! We eventually decided that "moderate" means "fuggetaboutit!!"

I suspect, though, that much of that had to do with expectations vs. reality. When we planned our trip, we fully expected to be able to find a half dozen or more letterboxes and geocaches each day. The problem is that the placers are hiding them in the neatest, most scenic spots they know -- which is usually on the very top of a mountain! Now that's all well and good if your plan is to climb that mountain today, but if your plan is to climb a half dozen mountains today you'd better get up early!

We once attempted a missing box. Now this box was listed as missing for quite some time. WE found it but had to go down the hill into the pickers. The owner was greatful. Instead of giving us the clues to the bonus box(we weren't from the area)they sent us the bonus box image for finding and rescueing the box.

Surprises are great

Quote I HATE bad clues. If it's a mystery or a puzzle that's one thing, but I just can't understand why some people think it's fun to make clues that are intentionally confusing or misleading. I also box with young children and they are SO disappointed when we get somewhere and the clues are just too vague to follow. Another pet peeve is when people have a pretty good idea a box is missing and they don't note it on the clue. We always try to see how recent a find or attempt is on the box - but sometimes neither are listed. I've gotten e-mail back from a planter after we logged an attempt saying something like "yeah, I've gotten e-mails from several people saying they couldn't find it, it must be missing" - at least put a note in the clues saying that the planter hasn't confirmed that it is missing but there have been several unsuccessful attempts. If it were just the grown-ups it wouldn't matter as much, I guess, but when, as a couple of weeks ago, we take the 6 and 7 year olds on a two mile hike in scorching heat for nothing - it's hard to inspire them to got out and look for the next box!

Okay - I feel better now after my vent!!

I'll add another peeve - posting a clue before the box is actually planted. I emailed the owner and sent photos of where I thought the box should have been. After several emails to the owner over about a month, the owner finally responded with a short message...'It's there'. I drove the half hour to the exact spot and there was the box just where I thought it should have been. But this time the area under the hiding object had been excavated and a box placed in it. I probably wouldn't have minded so much if they said...'Oops, so sorry. We were going to plant it that day but life got in the way.'

I would never post clues to a box before the box is in place! I'd want everything to be ready, in case someone wanted to rush right out and find the box. I, too, would be much more likely to go the other way, plant the box, then procrastinate and not get the clues up right away!

I have an idea,

What I'm gonna do is start a new website about letterboxing. And instead of it being county driven, I'll make all the searches city driven. And I'll make it highly addictive. And then I'll CHARGE PREMIUM MEMEBERSHIPS! And I'll be rolling in dough so all I have to do all day long is jet around the country with my flight attendant girlfriend and go boxing! I'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORK AGAIN!

MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, wait.

Mr. Yuk needs to get out and box......

Being confined on such a great day should not happen. I am in the same boat. Mrs Happydaze is out boxing with Smilingsued today and I have to work.

Wonder what my boss would say if I started planting boxes here in my cubicle??

Let's see.......Find the black CPU. next to the black CPU is a white CPU. At 240 degrees, is a black wall....

Me too....and my family is on a nice bike ride past a couple of boxes we need to get.

And I didn't get to bed until 4 a.m. (high school reunion) and had to be up for work at 8....

I feel like Ms. Yuk (with no marital relation intended....:-)

How about this one . . .

Someone plants a box in a city nearby. You see the listing and begin to get excited. The clue, however, doesn't make much sense, so you send the planter an AQ-mail. This boxer never takes the time to reply, so you wait a couple of weeks and check the clue again. The clue states that the box had been planted for only one person to find. Apparently the planter's brother has the box and doesn't even know it. Yeah, it's listed as a traditional box, not a cootie.

This thread reminds me that there are a few boxes out there for a whole now that need clues typed.

i actually did plant a box on the hillside right outside my window at my home where i work. it makes the "work" day go by a little easier hoping someone will come by. We get a lot of people come up to our hillside for the view of town. i keep hoping one of those people will be a boxer.

We found a geocache once that was planted along the fence in someone's front yard. It was down an old country road so not a lot of traffic. But right as we were finishing up the owner came home. His son had planted the cache several years before and then moved away. He really enjoyed talking to the people that stopped by. He said it made him feel a little more connected to his son. He told us all about his buffalo farm and the local history of the area. It really was very enjoyable.
