Functional Beer Drinking
Board: Beer, Wine, and Milkshakes

Well....I'd liike this board to stick around...so I thought I'd start a thread....
I do not have a favorite beer...Honestly, I find it hard that anyone could. I suppose we could start a "Desert Island..and you have only one beer" thread....but I think the beer you drink is dependent on several things...weather...type of food...activity...any number of things.....
Here are a few beers I that are my favorite in certain situations....please feel free to add your own....
After shoveling a bunch of snow: Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout
Eating boiled peanuts: Dixie Voodoo Lager
Eating BBQ: Mad River Jamaica Red Ale
Enjoying a Very Warm Evening on the Porch: Avery White Rascal
Sittin' at a Bar Watchin' the Game: Sam Adam's Boston Lager
Parked out in Rightfield in the Hot Sun Waitin' for a Fly Ball: Pabst Blue Ribbon (bottle)
As an aperitif or for dessert: Lindeman's Framboise
Proving that I Can Down a Pint Faster Than You: Guinness Stout
Celebrating my Wedding Anniversary: Highland Oatmeal Porter

I must admit that it wasn't until after having my second child that I started to like the taste of different beers.
Just a few weeks ago I had one called Levity (I think) that was good
I like Sam Adams Cherry Wheat when I'm cleaning out the pool
Flying Dog Tire biter or Amstel light after softball
Red Tulip is a good one for just sitting around.

Right now I'm on a tear through everything I can get my hands on, so I'll offer a style and a couple of examples that I can easily find.
Drinkin' session with friends: a Pilsner with slightly lower-than average ABV (Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, Stella Artois)
After cutting the lawn: Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy or Pacifico Clara (also a Pilsner)
Everyday "no reason other than to have one": IPA (Redhook, Bridgeport, Terrapin Rye Pale Ale)
When I want to really enjoy all the subtleties: Leffe Blond, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Ommegang Hennepin, La Fin du Monde
Carving: something with a higher ABV, like a double bock, a strong IPA

For a couple of years there was an importer who could get me a beer from the UK called Smiles. They provided it to a couple of restaurants in the Charlotte, NC area. They no longer are in business and I can't find the beer anywhere! Has anyone else seen it??
Also has anyone seen Lucky Beer in the Buddha bottle? I saw it in a magazine, but can't find it anywhere either!

I have had lucky beer. I'll see if my local bottle shop still has it, if so, you can expect a care package of a bottle or two.

Ask the importer to contact Highgate Brewery....they took over the brewing of Smiles after that brewery closed....Maybe you can get some that way....
I'm not familiar with Lucky....

Be sure to NOT declare package contents when you mail it. I believe the USPS has a thing against shipping alcohol without proper license....

Oread sent me two packages (one with two bottles and one with four bottles) to add to the ever-increasing collection of labels for conversion to rubber stamps, of all things...
And wouldn't you know it... the postal carrier—twice—managed to get the packages open, unwrap the bottles, drink the beer, rewrap the bottles, and reseal the package all without breaking the shipping label!!
I have no idea how they do it...

UPS doesn't. It's actually the states that have things against shipping alcohol, because then they can't collect the taxes, tariffs and duties.

Whoops! Forgot to include this one:
I Don't Leave Santa Milk and Cookies, I Leave Him:
Sweetwater Festive Ale (10.75 hours of carving... and not even halfway done)
or
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
(it's REALLY cool when I stay up late and get to drink one "with" Santa... heheheheheee)

That's gonna' be sweet...but I'll be most impressed if you can do one of the Sam Smith's Winter Warmer....that's a crazy label!
(I'd post a link to one...but they change every year I think).....

If I liked the beer, I'd say carve "Old-Leg Humper" it's a great label, but that's pretty much all it has going for it.
I think the same brewer also does Siberian Ale though, now THATS a good beer.

Hey Amanda, have you tried doing a search for it on the internet? As much as you travel you should end up in a city that has it.

I just got back from Ohio. So it will take me forever to catch up with the boards
But if you are ever in Logan, Ohio, stop at The Spotted Owl Cafe.
Seriously, the best root beer ever. It's homemade, on tap. You can really taste the sassafras
Frostytop...the only thing that tops it is the foam

I wish I has seen this board earlier, because being the well travelled world traveler that I have been in the past...I have a few faves also....
Flying to Iraq: Guinness Stout (Shannon Ireland Airport)
Serving in Northern Iraq with the Kurds: Tuborg (watch out the Kurds can drink beer)
Flying Home from Iraq: Whatever I can sneak
Cutting my lawn: Rolling Rock
Going to Mexico: Dos Equis
Going to Canada: Moosehead
Visiting Pittsburgh: Iron City
Visiting my family in the UP : Leinenkugels Summer Wheat or Honeyweiss
Grilling Steaks: Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat
Just sitting in the Hot Tub: Sam Adam's Boston Lager or Rolling Rock
Being Medevaced to Germany: It was a local beer in Kaiserslautern
St. Patrick's Day:
Just enjoying a Beer with friends and family is priceless...so enjoy responsibly and as always...
Be Safe...
