Quote but let's not start bashing LbNA

No, I don't think we should bash LbNA but we must point out the plus points on both sides. I have said this before, but I will repeat my previous post LbNA is Letterboxing NORTH AMERICA. We have a Yorkshire letterboxing site which is great for our needs, just as LbNA is great for a lot of American needs. Atlas Quest however is letterboxing WORLD WIDE.

Last year when I first found internet letterboxing I saw LbNA, as I was relatively new to computers I couldn't work my way around the LbNA site to find anything for England. Atlas Quest for a newbie was so simple! I found clues straight away and also Wow....there was a whole message board for people from the UK!!!!!!!

From the very beginning Ryan was there. I listed 2 or 3 of my original Yorkshire Letterbox clues but the plant date didn't go far enough back to let me put 1990. ''Never mind'' I thought, I will just put the correct plant date in the clues. (I didn't know enough about message boards to put anything on the Help board). Within an extremely short period of time Ryan sent me a personal aqmail to say he had changed it. It was now possible to list plant dates back to 1990! I was astounded. How could he possibly know???? How could he change it so instantly - Just For Me?????

And that is what this site is all about. Ryan will instantly respond whether you have asked or not. He can't always give you what you want, but he will have noticed and tried. How many paid employees would be there to do that? If you were paid, would you stay up until 2.30 a.m. in your morning just to chat to someone from across the world because their time frame was different to yours. I think not - but Ryan did with me.

I thank you Ryan for everything you do on this site. I thank you Ryan for talking to me, directly or indirectly. I thank you Ryan for taking Letterboxing to a level I would never have comprehended when I started letterboxing all those years ago.

YT - and I thank you Ryan for putting up with a soppy long-winded post. Guess who has been drinking!! :-)

Hey Ryan,

Take a look at this. It's an advertisement for Chevrolet in the Family Fun magazine. It was posted on the big board and is in the files section. It's a two part photo, but page one didn't have anything us LB'ers would be interested in.

Try the hot fudge shakes next time instead of the strawberry. Maybe that will help offset the "soppiness." *GRIN*

I sincerely hope he changed it to allow plant dates back to 1850! I mean, why not? It's just bits. And who knows, maybe somebody will actually list one!

Unfortunately, the bits are counted as seconds since December 31, 1969 (or something like that), and will not except negative numbers. Without some serious recoding (which is not going to happen), Atlas Quest will never support dates before 1969.

I'm not entirely sure it'll work beyond 2031 (or something like that) either, but hopefully they'll have 64-bit numbers for dates by then and it'll be a moot point. =)

As far as the Chevy ad goes, we have been discussing it on the Letterboxing news board... you can check it out there =o) I was the first to mention it and GT thought I was trying to pull a practical joke! LOL... If I had not gotten it out of the mailbox, practically straight out of the mailman's hands I would have thought someone was trying to pull a fast one on me... I was quite shocked to see it!

Cheers!

Over Wheaties? Now that IS the breakfast of champions!

Ok, StarSAELS, I'll save the beers for if you ever make it to Eugene (sorry, you'll have to make do with homebrew) and keep a tub of strawberry ice cream in the freezer for GT.

You should never have to appologize for serving homebrew, only appologize for NOT HAVING homebrew. :)

I have to apologize for not having homebrew. I don't have the space or the time for homebrewing. I'm hoping for some kind of windfall jackpot to fall into lap (which is very unlikely, as I'm not willing to throw money away for a lottery ticket) so I can quit my day job and open my own brewpub.

But to make up for not having homebrew, I always keep a decent selection of brews. In the fridge right now:

Stella Artois
Leffe Blond Belgian Ale
Rogue Dead Guy Ale (already a letterbox)
Flying Dog "Road Dog" Scottish Porter (soon to be a letterbox)
Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy
Sweetwater Road Trip Ale
Sam Adams Double Bock (saving for a special occasion)
Sam Adams Long Shot Old Ale (saving for a very special occasion)
Sweetwater Festive Ale v-2006 (saving for a comparison with the 2007 vintage)
Corona (party donation)
Red Stripe (party donation)
Ace Pear Cider (wife's)
Michelob Ultra Pomegranate something-or-other (wife's)

All in all, that's a better selection than most restaurants around here!

StarSAELS,

You definitely need to host a beer-tasting party. My friends used to do this. There were 5 or 6 brands, ranging in strength and flavor. Everyone had a scoresheet where you had a list of the 6 beers you'd be sampling and empty spaces for each round. The hosts would announce, this is Round 1. Then, everyone would drink about 6-12oz and make their guess on their scoresheet. Then, for Round 2 the hosts would hand out a different beer. Etc.

At the end, whoever had the most right got a prize. It was great fun. I wish my friends hadn't moved away.....

I think it would make a great mini gathering. We can all go to a central Taco Mac and let StarSAELS pick out all the beer for us.
After giving me 3 or 4 beers lets see if I can stamp an exchange????

Would y'all prefer a Saturday afternoon or a Friday evening?

Seems like the Mac on Mtn Industrial in Tucker is central to everybody on the "east" side of ATL, plus you can get in some pre- and post-event boxing at the Big Rock, if you're so inclined... but perhaps not, you if really need to recline...

I find carving after one beer helps steady things. Two is all right, but man, the time flies. After three my eyes don't want to focus on anything closer than 2 feet away, and that pretty much takes care of the carving.

Holy Cow! Do you still have any room for food? We're not drinkers but I usually don't have enough room in my fridge for a 2 liter bottle of Root Beer!

Big mistake! Your friends, who up to now have been content drinking mass-marketed swill, will develop a taste for better brews -- and their beverage expenses will rise markedly!

Back in the day, when Coors was only marketed in particular states (leading to the movie Smokey and the Bandit), a bunch of college buds and I did a road trip west. It wasn't to find Coors, we were heading that way for other reasons, but hey, we're there! So we stopped by a store and bought a couple cases of Coors. But one guy said he didn't care which beer he drank, wasn't willing to pay for Coors, bought a six pack of some cheaper brand for himself. Well, sitting around that evening, everyone compared the Coors to that cheap brand -- and there truly was no question, the Coors was far better (better than Coors sold today, too, IMHO -- but I'm not a beer drinker). I don't think that six-pack of the cheap stuff even got finished.

I knew a guy who paid his way through college with Coors. Every break between quarters, he'd drive west, load his van to the roof with Coors, and drive back. He sold it for enough to pay for that quarter, books, tuition, and expenses. And Coors really wasn't all that much different than several of the better beers available locally. It was just that so many people were willing to pay top dollar for a six-pack or two just to TRY it!

If someone gains a greater appreciation for the incredibly wide variety of beers that are "out there" (reputedly more beer labels than wine labels), then society as a whole will be better, because little by little (bottle by bottle??) the market share held by the mass-marketers will slip away. Never totally, but enough to provide inspiration to the micro- and craftbrewers.

And, comparatively speaking, there are a LOT of brews that are only a dollar or two more per six pack than the "swill". Buy them by the 12-pack and the gap closes. But there are plenty of brews that can cost $5 to $10 more per six pack (or 4-pack), but the average amateur beer connoisseur will shy away from those based on the price tag.

There's one huge advantage, though, to paying a little extra for the better stuff: no hangovers!
